Default lure flyback

When I was bass fishing I was using an undersize spinner . I tied into
a reasonable bass and the spinner came free on retrieve. It came right
towards my face and hit my glasses with a real resounding smack. Lucky
they are thick enough that they didn't break. But if I didn't wear
glasses then the spinner could have stuck in my eye. I'm wondering if
angler's angle the rod on retrieve so the lure doesn't flyback to them.
I was fishing in an isolated spot. I think also was the problem of the
undersize spinner. Lesson learned and passed on.
Thanks
