Frank Reid (sounds like sweet piece of boo) I've had the rod around 20 years, probably more. Until your post I had all but forgotten about it. This morning, spurred with renewed interest by this conversation, I dug it out and did some casting out front. First, the 7wt thing I mentioned must have been a misfiring synapse. Today a 5wt line felt about right to me. I used to have another cane rod, maybe I got them confused ... maybe my idea of what 'feels right' has changed a lot in the decade since I last touched the Powell? Whatever, I could cast a 5wt about the same as with a modern rod, but soft, rod I tried for comparison. The small size of the guides seems to limit distance upon shooting more than any rod loading factor, but I was still reaching respectable ranges with the 5 and a 6wt felt a bit heavy. I also 'remembered' the Powell as being heavy. Well it is heavier than a graphite but not really at all like I recalled. Lastly, I accepted the rod under the condition I "fish it, not just collect it" Therefore, since it's been years, guilt prods me in that direction. I'm going to tie some soft hackles today and, weather permitting, run down to the T___River to swing them through some riffles and into the the drop off below tomorrow. I don't seem to own a single "tweedy" thing to wear and I threw all my pipes away a couple decades ago. Um, I do have an English Barbour waxed cotton coat that might suit the "boo" image G Anyway, Frank, thanks for the link .... and for rekindling my interest in the rod |
