Offsho The mahi-mahi are still quite on the scarce side. A few nice fish are being caught, and it can be a long ride, but decent schoolies are showing up on the docks too. Not the good bite we all would want to continue through July. The blackfin tuna are in good supply on the Hump and most charterboats are definitely making the stop for them. Reefs: Yellowtail snapper fishing continues to be good. The big surprise is the king mackerel have shown up in the deep water off of Alligator Light. Slow trolling with live bait as in winter months is the key to success. Live pilchards or cigar minnows are most popular. If you can not get the live bait try a de-boned ballyhoo on a wire down deep. Gulf and Bay: The banks on the west edge of Florida Bay and the nearby Gulf waters are full of tarpon, permit and plenty of nice size trout. The tarpon and permit like the hot water. The trout are thriving in the turtle grass where the water is a little cooler. Fish the shallows of 1st. National Bank and Oxfoot Bank with a crab under a float for the tarpon and permit. Use the same rig around the markers for permit. Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo: Good reports of redfish catches are still the hot topic around Flamingo. Some guides traveled to Cape Sable last week to find snook and tripletail . The tripletail were found drifting between Flamingo and the cape area. Once again, there are lots of tarpon feeding in the channels in the Flamingo area. Where there are tarpon, there are sharks too, mostly blacktips and bulls. Closer to home the bonefish activity is in the early morning. |
