In roff and most other Usenet newsgroups the convention is
normal posting, in other venues such as email or listservs
the convention is top posting.

Some of us are capable of doing both.

LOL !! I predict you'll post all caps just as long as
Jeffie top posted. That is, just long enough to make
some spurious point and no longer.

Thus demonstrating that as a prognosticator you'd make a good
plumber........should bring back fond memories of your brilliant career
as a writer.

This would appear to be a good opportunity for you to demonstrate how
well you can count.

Wolfgang
no, he won't get it......yes, that IS the point.

You're right. I expected your response to be top-posted in
all caps.

listservs are simply another form of newsgroup. so, as all are
"communication", "conversation", and/or "discussion" venues, then
there's simply no logic or polite necessity/reason for the so-called
"convention" in any of the venues. some of us are capable of recognizing
that as well.

Thank you for posting your reply in the conventional
manner appropriate to roff. Some are doubtless pleased
that you're capable of doing so.

Weird stuff. I only belong to one list and that follows the usual
newsgroup conventions of interspersing or bottom posting and editing
out unimportant matter. List owner happen to have spent a very long
time on the 'Net and wants us to do that.

If I were on one that wanted top posting, I'd do that. But the list
owner should be making the rules clear when anyone joins the list and
when anyone violates the rules. List owner / system op should have
made that clear with your first 'incorrect' post.

Private emails I almost always do top posting unless I see a good
reason to intersperse my responses.

the explanation given for the "convention" of bottom-posting ought to
apply to listservs as well as newsgroups. i suppose e-mail is different,
though not necessarily...esp. for some. i think top-posting makes more
sense, especially when most of an original post is snipped. plus, it's
quicker for those who keep up with a thread. those who don't keep up
can go to the trouble of scrolling through the posts beneath the
response and all the others in a thread. it has nothing to do with being
polite or rude, being stupid or smart, or being lazy. frankly, it's
humorous at times to see net-nanny kenny (who struggles to be
unconventional) claim "convention" and politeness, then launch into an
impolite name-calling rant. it makes little difference to me where
something is posted in this or any other newsgroup...and i doubt it
makes all that much difference to most normal folks.

It's hilarious, actually. It is touching, though, that even after he lost his
real net nanny job he continues to perform for free. g

I expect it matters to precisely one person.

Well, . . . in all honesty, I *do* find it much easier to follow threads
when everyone posts one way or the other. I can follow either of these:

How are you today?
Fine - how are you?
I'm doing pretty well, thanks, except for this pain in my ass.
Pain in your ass? That's too bad. Are you seeing a doctor?
No - it goes away when I stop reading ROFF.
- or -
No - it goes away when I stop reading ROFF.
Pain in your ass? That's too bad. Are you seeing a doctor?
I'm doing pretty well, thanks, except for this pain in my ass.
Fine - how are you?
How are you today?

But after the combination of top and bottom, the stuff gets pretty tough to
follow:

Pain in your ass? That's too bad. Are you seeing a doctor?
Fine - how are you?
How are you today?
I'm doing pretty well, thanks, except for this pain in my ass.
No - it goes away when I stop reading ROFF.

So it would be best, in a perfect world, if everyone posted the same way.
However, unlike some, it doesn't ruin my day, and I can take the extra time
to decipher the code, especially when Jeff's posts are involved.
