I just received this email.

"Dear Mr. Cleveland,
I am a close personal friend of Nancy Anderson whom you may know as
"Cyli". I was with her today in the nursing home she is at and she
requested I contact you concerning her situation. Sadly, Nancy passed
away Tuesday evening at 10 pm. She had long been suffering with
cancer.
I was with her near the end and she was sleeping peacefully.

I found you via the posts in rec.outdoors.fishing.fly.

I am sorry to bring this news. I will miss her dearly.

If I can be of service feel free to contact me at this email address.

Sincerely,
AA"

I'm speechless right now. I'll try to post more later.

i simply cannot believe this. did anyone know of her condition?

Er, well, it's a pretty good guess that she was well aware of it...

....and on a related note, she apparently told darned few ROFFians about
it, certainly never discussed it here, and thus far, only one has
chosen to post an email notifying _him_ of the situation. And based on
that email, she didn't ask her friend to post anything here.

Very sad. Makes one reflective of the people we've been interacting with
for a decade or so here. When Cyli was looking her maker in the eye, she
still found the time to come around and say hi.

Um, well, I hate to break it to ya, Scott, but you're looking YOUR maker
in the eye...you may just be doing so from a little further away....

And according to the email, "Cyli" wanted George to know of her
situation, not the whole ****ing world...or even all of ROFF...

And so, I'll not comment on something that I may not be supposed to
know,

Deep. Way.

O.k., granted that George couldn't possibly have known Nancy as well as you
did (I mean, I've been to the man's house.....even slept there on
occasion....and despite numerous [and not entirely unprofessional] searches,
I have yet to unearth so much as a single super-secret dossier on any
ROFFian, dead or alive, past, present, or future) and yes, it is almost
certainly true that he has never audited "Googling Obscure Gun Parts 101" at
the Suthern Misisiipii Skool of Law and Soshul Siance while in a months long
drunken stupor, but have you ever stopped to wonder what life might be like
as NOT an asshole? Uh huh......food for thought, ainna?

Asshole.

And so, I'll not comment on something that I may not be supposed to
know,

Well, maybe some day......if you discover that you have something to say,
huh?

Imbecile.

Nancy was always good to me here and in my private communications with her.
She was a kind, gentle, forgiving soul as evidenced by her abilty to put up
with all of our crap here. Ever the voice of reason and calm, she will be
sorely missed.

Her ROFF Bouncer jersey will be raised to the rafters and retired. May her
feet be cooled by the waters she now wades.

One of the most reasoned, calm and droll voices to grace this place will be
sorely missed. As she stated in her tag line, Nancy WAS mostly
harmless.....except for her wonderful ability to deflect the rampant
misogyny that haunts this place and consequently inspire terror in its most
rabid practitioners. Her status as the only woman with a long tenure in ROFF
is a testament to her strength of character.

Like George and a few others here, I had the opportunity of meeting Nancy in
person. Clearly, she was not, and was never destined to be, a highly
successful fly fisher, but she was game and she had grace and sense enough
to enjoy the outings, the company, and even her minimal technical
accomplishments. In the time we spent together, she had trouble keeping up
on the road, as well as with the generally hectic pace of the trip we made
through Wisconsin and the U.P., but she did so with good cheer and without
complaint, the latter, in retrospect, foreshadowing what was presumably a
long and painful process of dying that she chose not to burden us with.
Maybe it was simple reticence on her part, a desire for privacy. I choose
to believe that it was an act of generosity. We could have been better
friends to her.

Everything you wrote about Cyli was apt and well-said Wolfgang, but the
above resonated with me. I'll miss her writings here.

I'll second that. It's also a good time to consider being better
friends to everyone.

Thnaks for letting us know about this George. And thanks to those of you
who shared some of your memories of her. I never met her, nor even knew
her real name. I enjoyed her posts, and will miss her.

Sad news indeed. I'll miss her sharp wit and pithy
commentary. I'm glad I had an opportunity to share
a stream and a campfire with Cyli, she was genuine,
down-to-earth, and a chain-smoking crusty old gal.
She told me her deadbeat ex-son-in-law was named Ken
so in the interest of being friendly she'd have to
call me Forty. She'll be missed around here.
