Default Orvis Catalog Pricing ?

Robert11 typed:
Hi,

Not much to do this afternoon, so I thought I'd post this question
regarding Orvis pricing. Guess it's a bit of a "rant," but am
curious about what others think, or if I am the only one.

Finally got the Orvis Men's wear and Gift catalogs that I had been
trying to get for several weeks now, per
my old post on this.

Looked at the prices for shirts, etc., and all I can say is "Wow !"
Are they kidding ?

I dunno - werte there smilies next to the prices?

I can go to my local Macy's, or LL Bean's catalog, and can get truly
the same quality item for
1/2 or what they are asking, or better. $ 80 cotton shirts ?

Then ****can the gift certificate and go to the other stores.

Does anyone actually buy at these prices ?

Yes - to the tune of many millions of dollars.

I remember in Eco there is a very interesting graph called, if I
remember right, Laffer's curve.

It shows that if you price an item too low, you'll sell zillions of
them, but your overall profit will be very low. If priced too high,
you'll make a killing on a few sold, but again, the overall profit
will be low. Somewhere between these two extremes is a peak, or a pricing
point,
which gives a maximum profit.
The curve always looks like a parabola, of course.

Can't help but feel that if they priced e.g., like Bean, and sell
much more, they would come out way ahead.

.. . . or they're perfectly happy selling what they sell at the price they
choose.

I know flyfishermen are rumored to be wealthy (hah !) but even if one
is "comfortable," I can't imagine their spending these kind of for
items priced like this. Or, perhaps they do ?.

Just curious what you folks think ?

I think you bitch too much, but that's just me. After you buy the Orvis
company, you can set the pricing any ol' which way you like. Until then,
either buy from them or don't. Personally, I have chosen "don't", but I
don't bitch about the prices.

I have a fair amount of Orvis stuff. Not a single item was bought at
full price. The nice thing about Perkin's operation is that they do
have great sales. In fact I just got one of their HD double zingers, a
real tank. Paid half price. Now that you are on their mailing list
you'll probably get their newsletter/sales flyer every other month.
I'd hold on to the gift cert for awhile if I were you.

Assuming you have an Orvis store near by, you might stop in and check
pricing and sales.
I recently bought this waist pack:
http://tinyurl.com/264smj

For the money they were asking, I wanted to check out the pack before
purchasing. On the Orvis website, the pack was listed at $129.00, when I got
out to the store, the price was mark at $98.00. I figured it would be the
same price that they had listed on the website and I don't think that was a
sales price either.

While at the store, I did look through the clothing and it seemed pricey,
however as David pointed out, the quality and style will outlast the cheap
route.

Having never owned any clothing with the Orvis label, I can't speak to the
issue of their quality versus that of any other brand. However, the matter
of style leaves me somewhat perplexed. How is it that Orvis clothing
remains in style longer than that of any other retailer who sells the same
styles?

Good question, I suppose it's the Orvis, Patagonia, Simms... patch sown on
the pocket??

I don't own any Orvis clothing either, I prefer the Columbia PFG sportswear
for the money.
I also like the Ex-Officio clothing, however it's generally way over priced
for my pocketbook.
And you?

Generally, I pay no attention to brand names in clothing. Well, that's not
quite accurate......generally I AVOID popular brand names, particularly when
the name or logo is emblazoned somewhere on the article of clothing; I've
never seen the benefit to the consumer (me) of paying for the privilege of
being a walking billboard. Nor have I found, in my limited experience with
popular brands, that they are necessarily more durable or stylish than many
other options. I buy virtually all my clothing from the end of season sale
racks at places like Target, Wal-Mart, etc., making only occasional
exceptions if I happen to find something sufficiently discounted at the
likes of Gander Mountain, Cabela's etc.

I recently made an unwitting exception when, after looking unsuccessfully
for a comfortable pair of low cut walking shoes in my usual haunts, I found
a pair that fit, were comfortable and were affordable at Gander Mountain.
It was only later when one of my co-workers asked if they were "Sketchers"
(which I had, till then, never heard of) that I discovered they are
apparently a popular brand. Incidentally, I was in the market for a new
pair of shoes not because my old ones, purchased for about fifteen bucks at
K-Mart seven or eight years earlier had worn out or disintegrated, but
because they disappeared.

As to quality, well most of the clothing items I purchase last long enough
that I throw individual articles out (or, more often, donate them, still
serviceable, to an organization like Goodwill Industries) only when my
storage space gets crammed so full as to be frustrating, as happened
recently in a move to a new apartment, or when, as I suspect happened with
my shoes, someone else disposes of them for me.

Wolfgang
whose sartorial tastes have thus far remained blessedly free of the taint of
stylishness.

I'm already married with two kids, so I don't think or worry too much about
being stylishly impressive. I tend to concentrate more on wearing clothing
and gear that is effective. Wolgang can probably agree that knowing what to
wear, when to wear it, and how to wear it are FAR more important than those
items being worn being stylish. Seasons in this part of the country
(Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc.) can change in the blink of an eye.
Some of my favorite (and best) gear is stuff I picked up as a supply
sergeant while still in the Marine Corps. The old tan poly-pros, nylon
poncho liners, and glove liners are some of my best gear. No brand name on
any of them. The only brand name gear I DO swear by is my Underarmor. I
tried cheaper versions and it does work better for me in the conditions it
is marketed for. My ALL TIME favorite no name piece of non-clothing gear is
my roll of 550 chord. I keep about 20 yrds of the stuff in a zip lock with
me whenever I venture out. Great for many emergencies.
