ok, ok...i know... but honestly, it's the most encouraging thing i've
seen in the national political landscape in far too long a time. i fear
it may not last, that iowa is a unique island in the political world,
and that it will cause the rivals to resort to dirty works appealing to
the baser sense of the electorate...but, damn, i'm hopeful and nearly
optimistic. g more than 50% of the caucus participants were 1st
timers...perhaps all us cynics are dying out and there will be a new
vigor in a changed political world.

you know, jr's post analogizing the jfk movement to the growing
sense of obama's power among the young is very convincing. thinking
back to those halcyon times, i saw myself amongst the adoring throngs
of kids in chapel hill in the early 60's, watching our hopes for the
future rise in the hands of jack kennedy.
fast forward to the present, and i watched myself, hunched and
fuming over my discomfort, as my hoped for image of the clintons back
in the whitehouse began to fade in the bright light rising out of
iowa.
maybe it's time for the young to give us another shot of
charisma.

it is very difficult to acknowledge one's old age because of all that
aging entails in this society...plus, whatever the stuff is that sees
out of my eyes still looks at the world and what's around me with the
same sense of youth i felt at 25 notwithstanding my gray hair, wrinkled
and sagging skin, pot belly, and the aches & pains equal to my
years...however, i agree with you. it's invigorating to feel a sense of
hope again, even if only as a voyeur, and also, though long ago, once to
have had the opportunity of a similar youthful zeal about politics and
making change in our country. i think you and i have been very
fortunate as far as the times and places we have lived our lives...and,
i'm hopeful for another go round. g

funny you should mention that, richard. actually, as i posted
earlier, i don't drink vodka anymore. about three weeks ago, i
contracted a *serious* upper respiratory infection that landed me
(long story short) in the hospital, briefly. i was so sick i didn't
even want a drink for several days. when i began to feel better, i
began to want a drink. went to the fridge for my stoli, rolled up a
stiffie, and essayed my first swallow. i damn near threw up.
couldn't drink the stuff. i was near panic, until i remembered the
bottle of scotch i keep for guests. one dewars and a touch of water
later, and i was off and running.
since then, i have been on a search for a preferred "everyday"
scotch. i have decided on a very inexpensive highland single malt
from macclelland's. but for special occasions and just for variance,
i have also purchased a supply of balvenie, chivas regal, and isle of
jura. all of different taste, etc, but all good.
i know and appreciate your unending desire for accuracy in your
communications, and i am certain that you will address me in the
future as a "... drinking troll."

Ah...

My condolences on both your illness and, er, loss and my apologies for
the mislabeling...allow me to correct that mistake:

...as my hoped for image of the clintons back
in the whitehouse...

Ya Goddamned Scotch-drinking troll...

IAC, it's interesting and coincidental your mention of a change of taste
after an illness. Did they anesthetize you? The reason I ask is that
over the holidays a friend who now doesn't eat meat related the story of
how she lost her taste (actual "taste" rather than any change in
"desire" to eat it - IOW, it actually tastes "bad" to her rather than
any change in personal feelings about eating it) for it after being put
under for surgery. She works (in administration, not medicine) at a
hospital and an anesthesiologist she asked there said such drastic
changes in "tastebuds" happen on occasion after such. Granted, one
admin person asking one med person isn't exactly concrete proof, but...

As to your choices, I've heard nothing but good things about the
MacClelland's and picked a selection up while in Texas, but haven't
tried any of it yet. But as to the Chivas, try some Johnny Walker Black
or Blue, and you'll see the Chivas as God intended: for use as charcoal
starter or helping one forget he's the too-useless-to-shoot Kennedy
brother...
