I think t he clue to the lack of success of the stealth guy is answered above in the part that says, 'Both were fishing the same large pool.' Unless it was very large, every fish in it was doubtless alerted by the guy on the rock. No point to the other guy fishing with stealth. I'd give odds that the fish don't follow the cast and think that anything _but_ what the visible guy is doing is safe. -- rbc:vixen,Minnow Goddess,Willow Watcher, and all that sort of thing. If you discount the enjoyment, and want to put the technicalities in order
of preference, ( somewhat dependent on where you are fishing, what with, and what for),then mine would be; Catching fish. Preferably large or difficult fish. This may only be consistently achieved by the use of; Stealth. Reading the water. Stealth. Presentation. Stealth. Choice of fly, to suit either the hatch, or conditions. Stealth. This is also easier if you know the water well. It also helps considerably if somebody has not just disturbed the water in some way. All the rest may or may not be useful, but these are essentials. ![]() "Dave Mc" wrote... What do you think is the most important aspect in fly fishing? Your at a gold medal, medium sized stream, trout are 10" to 20" and they're all over the place, but won't take anything. The area is well fished, the fish are spooky but also used to fisherman being around so, they don't run and hide. No hatch, no fish rising. Casting?- putting the fly exactly where it needs to be. Fly selection?- match what they're eating! Presentation?- drag free, correct depth. Stealth?- don't let them know you there. None of the above. I just got back from fishing a stream much like you describe, and the most important aspect is to not have some freakin' a-hole on the opposite bank wade - no splash like a baby in a wading pool - within ten feet upstream of the run you're trying to fish, then stand 10 feet away from you while he casts into the pool you were stalking that now has no fish. Then make sure he doesn't get a phone call and talk on the phone like he's in a busy bus terminal. Hmmm, I guess I *am* a little ****ed. ;-) I spent the whole weekend with honey-dos just so I could disappear for a few hours today to get some peace and quiet on the stream for the first time this season. Yeah, that worked out well. -- TL, Tim http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

In my dreams, I pull a bottle of KY jelly out of my vest, get the guy's attention, and say "Hey....nothin's bitin'...wanna try another way to pass the time?" That oughta clear the stream PRONTO. :-) Haven't tried it yet, though. |

Like the one about being able to sit in my front yard with a .223, clear the neighborhood of stray dogs once and for all, and have the cops stop by afterward with a case of Molson. you "oughta" consider the alternative possibility that you might simply discover/encourage a new fishing companion. Yeah....I suppose the plan could go wrong. Someone has to come with another idea. Wait...I have it! Bring my ex mother-in-law, who talks so much that I've seen people try to hang themselves with their belts. Sic her on the other fishermen..... |

ah...the mum-in-law gambit. among the most feared moves in any game.
mine is 94, frail, with alzheimers...she still scares the hell outta me and controls her daughter's life. mere fishermen have no chance against such a force of nature...
