I wondered about that when you talked about fixing it up yourself.
You can get an interior infection and, with the skin all closed up,
the non-oxy breathing bacteria in there can go to town. That's why
puncture wounds are drained and (if possible) soaked regularly for
several days before they're allowed to close completely (found out
when the cat tried to eat my face, but I found out the easy way. In
the ER and hospital while still bleeding.).

I'd think if you just let a fish swim around in Tung oil until he was well
soaked and then hung him out to dry - he might come out with a pretty
