After checking it out, I can't recommend it for trout fishing. The assumption is that you're fishing with a light tippet and expecting to get hit by a mega-sized trout. Considering how often one knowingly is going to walk into this situation, I'm not ready to dedicate my gear set-up to accommodate nail knotting the shock gum into place. However, if I were fishing the salt for large, hard-hitting fish with a very fast action rod, I might consider it. --Dave Eriksen |

About 25 or so years ago, the gum shock absorber was somewhat popular on the South Platte (small flies, light tippet, big fish). That was when tippet was far less strong than it is today. Don't see anyone using them anymore and don't think they're needed. Willi |

Some people believe that you should not have any give in your setup, from
flyline through tippet. It insures a better hookset. If you're fishing for some of the bigger sal****er varieties, like tarpon, most peole build in one or two bimini loops. Each gives a bit. Two loops in 20 # test will give between a half and one inch. I do a lot of steelhead fishing, and I have never run into anyone that had shock tippet in their rig. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Are you still wasting your time with spam?...
