I was almost in the same situation. But we had a very charismatic head
football coach. They wrangled all of us 8th graders into the Gym and
he gave a big, effective recruitment speech. A bunch of us signed up.
Not being either very fast or athletic the Freshman coach (who was a
pig in human disguise) decided that my main position would be on the
line for use as (essentially) a human blocking dummy. They'd put these
big 200 lb farm boys opposite me (120 lbs) on the line during practice
and they would then proceed to mug me for the next hour and a half.
One guy even went over to the coach (who was a pig in human disguise)
and told him he felt sorry for me. The coach in turn yelled at him for
slacking off and sent him back out to keep pummeling me with renewed
vigor. The guy then proceeded to apologise to me before every play.
But I stuck it out for two years. I got to play in an actual game for
a total of 3 minutes in those two years. Maybe I would have stuck with
it if the charismatic varsity coach hadn't quit and the Junior High
coach (who was a pig in human disguise) hadn't taken his place.
Forensics was a much better experience.

High school wrestling for the first three years until I broke some
fingers wrestling up a weight class. I ran cross country for the last
three years. My college dissolved the wrestling team just before I got
there (a victim of Title IX, some of the ex-wrestlers said, a victim
of rising insurance rates according to others) and the XC was popular
enough that I wasn't even in the running for a team spot. So, I took
up the standard hobbies of beer and girls. I was pretty good at beer,
so much so that I THOUGHT I was good at girls.

Football, wrestling and track (mile & 2 mile) in high school.
Wrestling in college.

Football
Basketball.

Then I started hanging out with the cool guys and gals on the debate
team.

HS: soccer, lacrosse, & baseball

College: lacrosse, hockey (intramural), post-match drinking with the rugby
side.

Post-college: softball, volleyball.

Didn't play any organized sports, as the coaches discriminated against
slow, weak, and uncoordinated guys.

I did play IM tennis, softball, football, and my personal favorite,
broomball. You probably have to be from Canada or a northern tier
state to even know what broomball is, but trust me, its the world's
most entertaining sport.

Played rugby badly all my school years, finishing as a loose forward
(fast) at high school. Left school, discovered beer, continued to play
rugby badly but quickly became a tight head prop (slow). Gave it up at
40 when I could not get out of bed the next morning and not because of
the hangover.
