Off the subject but... My wife and I are contemplating moving to NC.
Maybe around Wilson, as she is an antique dealer. Where does one find good fly fishing in NC? Mind you I am from southern California and have not been to NC yet. Thanks! Ken Fortenberry wrote: In picking through all my flies to select the ones I want to carry in my vest that day I came across a yellow humpy that must have been among the first I ever tied. The proportions were all wrong, the hackle was at least two sizes too big and poorly tied to boot. So naturally I tossed it in the box. I challenge you to find ANYTHING in, near, or around a North Carolina mountain stream that looks like a yellow humpy. There is no aquatic insect, surface or sub-surface that looks like a yellow humpy, there is no terrestrial or even extra- terrestrial that looks like a yellow humpy ! So why do they work ? Woudn't you like to just once be able to do a Vulcan mind meld with a trout and ask him "What in the hell were you THINKING ?" |

Off the subject but... Hey, Jim. In you Mozilla Thunderbird, click on Tools, Account Settings, Composition and Addressing, make sure that "Automatically quote the original message when replying" is checked and then in the drop down box below that select "start my reply below the quote." That will put your reply at the bottom were it belongs. Russell Just doing my part for peace and happiness. |

oh jeezus russell...one arrogant miss manners is enough. g
jim...most folks interested in a conversation will follow the thread and have no difficulty with your post wherever it may appear on the page. i prefer top posting... many/most may not. some will call you names for top-posting; others will tolerate or have no problem with it. i say, suit yourself...this isn't exactly fine dining. g for those who remember the thread, top posting saves the scroll down. for those that don't, a top or bottom post requires a scroll down. anyway, jim...to answer your question... wilson is in eastern nc...the coastal plains. a nice enough place, but not a mecca of much. in eastern nc, wilmington, new bern, edenton are more historical and "antique" oriented in my opinion. in wilson, you'll be 4-6 hours from mountain trout fishing, and about 2-3 from salt marsh puppy drum (redfish), and 2-4 hours from the ocean. in western nc, there are numerous small towns with an antique focus - salisbury, tryon, boone, asheville, highlands, brevard, franklin...to name a few. much nicer destinations, imo. jeff (45 minutes east of wilson) Russell D. bottom-posted to jim's easily read top post: Hey, Jim. Thanks! i can't imagine any rational explanation for why someone would want to live in wilson, nc, even if there were chippendale fittings at the local mcdonalds. one thing's for sure--you would never have to buy a sauna. just stand outside your front door from may through october for about 30 minutes, between 11am and 6pm. good fly fishing in the old north state starts in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains, over two hundred miles west of wilson. i would suggest asheville, boone, or greensboro, as possible homesites. check out a map. wayno (happy in greensboro) |

I'm a bit spoiled here in SoCal, it's been like 75F and 20-40% humidity and I'm about 40 mins from Malibu (Baywatch) beach. We only picked on Wilson because we saw actual affordable housing there. My wife is an antique dealer and we understand there are lot's of stores there in/near Wilson. A 3 BR 2 BA condo goes for like $400K + here. We saw nice 3 br 2 ba houses on Wilson for like $120K. Asheville sounds very awesome! We've been talking about visiting there for years. Isn't Greensboro pretty close to Wilson? Is it that much nicer? We were hoping for Mt. Airy (Mayberry?) but never been ![]() streams/lakes you like in NC? |
