When I was a kid my dad bought a bunch of Abu Garcia 5000D bait casters

for
cat fishing. We had those rigged on some fishing rods that could have
doubled as pool cues. They would cast a 1 oz pancake sinker just fine

when
the spool tension was dialed in right. They would occassionaly backlash,
but I don't recall that were very bad. I don't think we were able to get
the casting distance that I can with my Daiwa 150i, but they did a pretty
fair job over all. No magnetic backlash control or anythign like that.

My
dad still has a couple of them and they still work about the same as ever
after nearly thirty years. They rarely get serviced.

I have been seriously considering buyng a couple of inexpensive metal

round
body Abu Garcias instead on the expensive plastic body Pfluegers,

Quantums,
and Shimanos I have now for my new reels next season.

I've heard that the abu reels are also very reliable and borderline
indestructible... Looks like Cabe**'s has some really good deals on
those as well..

Thanks!
Rob

I use a couple of abu 4601's for both trout trolling and throwing plastics
and small Rattletraps. They are nice feeling reels. They are not the
greatest, but for $40 on sale, they do a great job. First place I used the
4600's was with a guide on Lake Fork. On Falcon rods, and we got a lot of
small bass that day. I have a 6500 I use for Striped bass bait fishing, is
starting to have some corrosion problems as it also gets used at times in
Sal****er. But the reel is at least 20 years old.

Abu Garcia reels are very reliable. I have some that are over 20 years old
and still going strong. They aren't as smooth as my Shimanos though and
they are heavier. My Abu's have been relegated to backup duty and are being
replaced with Shimano Chronarchs and Curados.

Todays Abu's are nothing compared to those 20 year old reels you have.

Two bad things happened to Abu Garcia IMO: Pure and Fishing
