You guys are pretty rough on Tom!

I think it's an outstanding fish especially first time and from such
small water.
Very cool, Tom.

Willi

I don't think anyone is being hard at all. Tom is obviously
enthusiastic and wants to learn so people are providing additional
info.

It was the guy's first fish! I never caught a Steelhead. I thought it
was ****in' cool.

Don't ya think

"Nice tail, but isnt the fish a bit thin? Did you release him/her again?"

as a total post directed toward a guy's first fish is being a bit anal?

Willi

OK, the crack about the tail being thin was a bit of a cheap shot --
I'll give ya that one, but only because I'm a nice guy.

However, if you have to release all but one, it's best to fight the
rest quickly and release them at low risk. Heavier tackle and low
risk photo techniques are better for C&R.

Peter

All too true. We've had some discussions on a sw forum regarding proper
techniques to catch and release bluefish. Many just treat this as a trash fish,
undeservedly, or are afraid to deal with their teeth.

For me, I catch so few large trout, that when I do, it's all I can do to decide
what to do with the fish. I never tire of reading reminders about proper fish
fighting, holding, photo ops, releasing so that somehow my dense braincells
will retain this info in the heat of the moment.

Congrats, Tom, and thanks to all for sharing tips ++.

We use the 8 weughts a lot down here in Texas and find them very versitle. I
have enjoyed fishing them for most of my life.

Everybody who wants to do this right, wants to learn. There's no
problem with his photo because he killed that fish and took it home.

Congratulations on your catch. Not just a nice fish, but an
absolutely gorgeous piece of small steelhead water in the background.

Could I just mention, however--in the event you were C&Ring--that if
that fish, held that way, were to thrash out of your grip and drop on
those rocks, it could conceivably do itself considerable harm. Very
nice pics can be made of fish held just barely (inches) over the
surface of the water.
