Julian timed the fight. It took 45 minutes to get the fish into the boat.
He didn't have a scale, but we figured it was about 80 lbs. In case you
missed the photo, here's the link again. :-)

Cool

I've honestly never understood the appeal of "the fight" in fishing when
reading such stories. Some of Zane Gray's epic struggles sounded
incredibly boring, to me.

But, then, I've never caught any really big fish, a few Stripers around 15
pounds being my best. But with those the fight seemed anti-climatic and
after the first short bit I just wanted to get back to fishing and hopefully
another "take."

Guess I'll never get it, but I AM happy you do and did G

Nice fish, rw

At about the 30 minute mark I was thinking, "**** you, tarpon! Just
quit, damn it."

My usual attitude when fishing for trout is similar to yours: The fight
is anticlimactic, and fooling the fish into taking the fly is the
important thing. On the other hand, if the fish doesn't fight well for
one reason or another, that does tend to spoil the experience.

perceptive observation, imho, and the same comment might well apply to
any human endeavor, including, um, well, you know. about 15 minutes is long
enough to do *anything* of that level of intensity.

Nice Fish RW!
What was it's weight?
What type of fly?
Will you be at the Clave in July?
Too many questions?
A friend landed a 130+ lb. tarpon in the keys this past winter (Good Fish?).
First on his fly rod. 45 minute fight. Bum stays there 3 months every year.

Here's a link to a photo of a tarpon I caught about a week and a half
ago in Belize:

I just got home and I'm beat. I'll post details later if anyone is
interested.
