P.S. when you fish these fllies, both dries and nymphs, wear eye
protection...they are big and heavy and move all over in the wind.

It also helps to twitch them (the dries) around on the surface. Watch
the naturals -- they're twitching like crazy.

good point rw... this is one of the few times outside of hoppers that
a delicate presentation is not required in fact a resounding "plop"
is preferred and the adults do skitter all over the surface. If they
are on, you will see some huge fish and I mean 6 to 9+ pound browns.
In the Madison current this is equal to a chrome Steelhead in the 10#
plus range in less "heavy" water... 4x will seem thread like :-)

Of course I'll also have our stunted Maryland version in the box as well.

The Salmonflies are HUGE. They make the big Eastern Mayflies look like
midges. They look like little birds skimming across the water when
they're swimming toward shore.

Obviously they bring big fish to the surface. Hopefully we'll get at
least part of the hatch. Here in CO, I've only seen it once, thanks to
Charlie W. It was amazing! Usually they come off when our river are in
raging runoff and are unfishable.

"We"? Hopefully that means you've decided to come on up for at least part of
the clave.

Danl

And bring some of those big salmon fly patterns......

Think it will probably happen. I was hoping to hitch a ride with Bruce
but he's coming up through Salt Lake.

I tied up about a dozen.

Another dozen might be a good idea. Better yet, bring the materials. Or
at least tell us which stereo receiver you bought. :-)

Good news! If you decide to fly and need a ride to/from the airport, let me
know.

Last year, we caught just the tail-end of the salmon fly hatch at the
western clave. AIR, IIRC, AFAIK, and IYCFTOTKMY, the fish weren't interested
in much else when the big bugs were on the water. Luckily for me, Willi had
tied up some monstrous, sparrow-sized flies to match the naturals. If you're
reading, Willi, and you don't mind, you might post the recipe on ROFFT.
Failing that, and supposing the salmon flies are there this year, what are
the recommended flies for these bugs?

Danl

just spoke with kelly at slide inn...he says there is some doubt whether
the salmon fly will even show this year because of hard winds.
apparently lots of wind blows the hatch away from the water.

btw, dan'l, i've taken care of confirming room switches...wayno's in
your slot (now in #5) for july 8-14...but you'll need to confirm asadi's
days when you get there. joe and i are in #7 for july 6-20.

kelly still has you booked for 8-17...he didn't know about your
sublet(s). i took care of informing him about wayno and ree, but wasn't
sure about the deal with asadi and it was getting weird. if you're still
confused, e-mail me with confusing questions. g

Well, Durn! Kelly's wife made a note of it and sent me a receipt noting
same. This will not end in happiness, I fear.
