I'm working on using Waddington shanks connected to the hook by a loop
of 20# Fireline rather than a direct connection.

SNIP

Problem with very flexible connections is that they are intrinsically bad
hookers. Piece of silicone or similar tubing over the shank to keep the hook
"in-line" does improve this somewhat.

Probably the most successful PNW steelhead fly out there, the Intruder,
uses an unsupported Fireline loop with success so we'll have to see how
it goes. Fireline is pretty stiff in it's own right plus it holds
whatever position you place it in (unlike springy mono) so it should
stay in-line better than a mono loop.

Thank you. I can now choose to believe that the fact I've never *heard*
of this most successful fly accounts for my relative *lack* of success
with PNW steelhead so far this year.....

I believe there's a money back guarantee if it doesn't catch steelhead, just
as there was with a Silver Hilton Cones, Golden Bead Assassin, Brindle Bug,
Green Butt Skunk, Poxyback Golden Stone, Soft milky egg patterns, and the
October Caddis Skater which by the way you can only fish in October to get a
refund.

All kidding aside, I would like to add one of these Intruders to my
steelhead fly box for the Trinity.

Hey, I'm only takin' the word of those two-handed steelhead junkies on
the Left Coast -- me, I'd never use one . . . .

and when you look at Jack's Intruder pattern, you'll see the use of the
Fireline loop.

Going back to Tom's post, these streamers I'm working on will be in
two sizes: steelhead and resident trout. I'd like to send a few of
the trout versions off to the Penns crew so they can test drive them
in the spring. Some will be based on the weamer pattern while I'm
working on another style to use for the dace/chub/sculpin class of
baitfish.

For the Sculpin pattern, I'm looking at using a small Wilson or Salar
double turned up to avoid snagging when run deep. I'm aiming for a
weight balance that'll enable it to swim well and still get down.

that would be, by my best computations, and with a little empirical
experience added, as follows: 5'6", 130, 36b, full lips, and an almost
obsessive attraction to early bob dylan.
