Wow, that sounds pretty simple & I can even see how an unsuspecting
co-angler could be fooled.

Thanks Rich.

Hey, looks like I may be spending the whole month of September up at
Champlain next year Rich. Federation State Team second week, Everstart last
week, and I'll see what I can cram in there between them - especially a few
days with you bud.

Never heard the term Rich, can you explain what happens with "staked"

bass?

Bass is hooked in mouth with a large safety pin or a simple wire (formed
from a paper clip or similar) looped through the tissue behind the upper
maxillary. Length of light line (6 or 8 pound test, 4 to 8 feet long) is
tied to clip and to something anchored to bottom in reasonably shallow
water. Stump, dock piling, etc.

Angler with deep diving crankbait and heavy line (EG 50 pound power pro)
casts around target until he snags the light mono. As he reels in, the
laws of physics dictate that his multi-trebeled crankbait will end up
bumping into the fish's face. Odds are, he's going to snag the fish on
the outside of the face somewhere, or even snag the clip. Now he sets
the hook hard, breaking the light mono.

Trick was either invented or adopted by some TV fishermen to mimic
actual catches on camera.

I agree with Mike 100% Ken. Baseball's house is a mess bud. And what's
with the quotes around the word sport? You don't consider bass fishing a
sport Ken?

Pete Rose has been booted out of MLB for life and he didn't
cheat at baseball, he placed bets on MLB while managing.
You can defend the so-called "sport" of bass fishing without
denigrating baseball.

Mr. Fortenberry,I bet that statement of yours won't hold much water on
rec.outdoors.fly fishing either.

I don't consider any of the things I mentioned in this thread,
golf, poker, darts, bowling, synchronized swimming, to be sports.
Obviously some will disagree, I mean they let synchronized
swimming in the Olympics fer cryin' out loud. But that's OK by
me, we can agree to disagree.

As for roff, there's not much enthusiasm there for competitive
fishing of any sort. In fact, if you want to count your own fish
most roffians would consider that odd but OK, but when you start
counting the other guys fish and woofing that's when you cross
a line. Once again, different strokes ...

No, football is a sport, baseball is a sport, but golf
and poker and bass fishing are recreations that hang out
on the same TV channels as sport. And yeah, the whole
steroids thing is a mess but baseball is bigger than the
current custodians of the game. No matter how dumb the
players or greedy the owners baseball itself always
transcends them.

Lol Ken, I'd like to pose that same question to you after YOU practice for a
week, then endure 4 "breezy" tournament days on Lake Erie in a 20' bass
boat. To put tournament bass fishing & poker on the same shelf is just
wrong my friend.

Tournament bass fishing is far more mentally & physically challenging than
baseball. The only differences are that bassers aren't overpaid, they must
*earn* thier money & they appreciate thier fans lol...

Guys like Sosa, Thome...don't even get me started!

Warren ;-)

OK, so maybe not poker but how about darts and bowling ? Or
if it absolutely has to have water and challenges what about
synchronized swimming ? Pro bass fishermen in waterproof eye
makeup and sequined swimsuits, now *THERE'S* a sport !! ;-)

I don't know Warren, I'll betcha there's more pro baseball
players who could be pro bass fishermen than vice versa.

Guys like Sosa, Thome...don't even get me started!

Never liked Sosa much, he doesn't respect the game and
besides I'm a Cardinal fan, but I've never heard a bad
word about Jim Thome.

Well, there you have it, my argument in a nutshell.

Bass fishing is no more a "physical activity" than
tossing darts, or bowling balls and engaging in bass
fishing competitively is a very recent phenomenon.

Thanks Pat.

Fishing IS a sport. Baseball, football et al are athletic competitions.
Fishing was called a sport long before the term was applied to games
like baseball and football.

That distinction, the one between recreation and athletics,
is the one I use to separate mere competition from sport.
I guess it's just semantics but to my mind sport is between
athletes. And no offense intended but bowlers, dart throwers,
golfers, and bass fishermen are not athletes.
