![]() Is a weighted base preferable to a C clamp base? Pedestal base. Throw a C-clamp from the hardware store into the package. Good point! Thank you, Bob S. |

news ![]() Looking to purchase a gift for a relative and would like to get him a new vise as the no-name one he has is pretty useless. I don't know a thing about tying flies other than what I've read, so I have no experience with what works and what doesn't. I see that prices are all over the place so for a starter - let's say the budget is good for $200 - maybe a bit more. Not asking "what's the best", but rather, what vise would you recommend and maybe a little rationale as to why you prefer one type over another. The fly fishing he does is all freshwater, streams and lakes here in the northeast and mainly fishes for trout and bass. Yep, I'm planning on uses the flies he makes - so they gotta be done right....;-) Is a weighted base preferable to a C clamp base? I'd like to get him one that really works well and essentially becomes transparent to the tie flying process -or- in other words, it doesn't become a pain in the butt to use. Would rather cry once and get one that he'll enjoy using and not just tuck it under the bench - but there is a budget so the $600+ models are out of the picture. Your comments and advice are appreciated, Bob S. Vise reviews at http://www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/hwvise/index.html rt |

It does what a vise should do (which really isn't all that much) It got to see the new model that Bevin had at the San Juan. Some of the parts that are machined on mine are now molded. I don't know if that's necessarily bad but it doesn't LOOK as well made. Willi |

Your comments and advice are appreciated, Bob S. Vise reviews at http://www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/hwvise/index.html rt I see they've added the Griffin Mongoose and placed it above the Traveller and below the Dyna King Trekker. That feels about right to me. I have the Mongoose and it definitely feels like a tighter machine than my friend's Traveller. I haven't used a Trekker but it appears to be even more nicely finished than my Mongoose. But... since a person can tie a fly on a $10 vise that will fool any fish that cares to be fooled, any of the vises that go for $50 on up will more than do the job, with the added benefit of lasting a long, long time. g.c. |

![]() Vise reviews at http://www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/hwvise/index.html rt This is a second attempt at making this post. I don't see the one I made earlier today so here it is - again.... rt, And many thanks to those that responded. After reading the review (below), looking at many sites and talking to several others - the Peak vise was ordered directly from Peak this morning. They have a bit of a promo going on that includes all the upgrades available (extra midge jaws, C clamp, riser and brass knobs) for $220 - right within the target budget. Cabela's carry's the Peak vise ($149) but you would have to order the options from Peak so its six of one, or a half a dozen of the other. Lifetime warranty and made in the USA were also deciding factors, so all in all, I believe my brother-in-law will enjoy his new toy and I'll have a lifetime supply of custom made flies to try. Not a bad deal when you consider his wife is a fantastic cook ..... and we visit often....! Thanks, Bob S. They recommend the Peak Vise in your price range. It's funny that you decided to go with the peak. After I had posted my comments about the Renzetti "Traveler," I happened to read some of the other posts. I clicked onto the link provided with the comparisons. I saw the Peak and remembered that I had seen one just two weeks ago at Uncle Wally's Wilson's Creek Outfitters, in Morganton, NC! One of Wally's buddies came by to tie up some flyz and he had a Peak vise. I liked its simplistic stylings. It was nice and hefty, but it didn't come with a clamp-on? I may look into gettin' a Peak myself, now that you have peaked my interest! Op |

Mark,
I did a lot of looking and although I've never tied a fly, this vise is a well thought out design that others seem to like - obviously, the reviewer did. I'm sure I'll get an opportunity to use it and then I'll know for sure whether it's good or not.... Thanks for the help, Bob S. |

If your brother-in-law doesn't like the Peak, I am willin' to accept it as payment for my "help!" Seriously, I can't imagine him not appreciating such a fine gift. Thank you for remindin' me of the Peak. Op |
