Tom, are you better off now than you were five or six years ago? The
answer HAS to be yes. Inflation is down, unemployment is practically
non-existant, interest rates are low. The economy is booming and the
market is hitting all time highs. AND there has been no terrorist
attack on the U.S.

why should "better off" refer to finances? And, if it does, do we judge the
economy by the fate of some affluent white guy, whose family has been in the
banking business since the Civil War? The gap between haves and have nots is
staggering in this society, and the lack of universal health insurance when
we can afford a needless war and tax cuts for the top end is a disgrace.

Are we at war or is this just a criminal problem, you know, like
someone blowing up your car?

sorry, but I subscribe to the international crime theory, hardly a war in
any conventional sense.

Man, you libs are gonna be ****ed when the US becomes a theocracy.
It could happen.

sometimes, I think it already has.......

That's pretty crappy, Dave, on many levels.

Are we at war or is this just a criminal problem, you know, like
someone blowing up your car? We *are* at war, and we have been for a
number of years, even before Bush was elected. Clinton did nothing
against the terrorists, but Bush has. We have killed thousands of
Taliban and al Qaeda terrorists, and captured hundreds more. Yes, it
has cost us dearly in lives lost in the military, including my great
nephew. (At the funeral in Arlington his wife said that his 2nd tour
was supposed to be up in just a few more weeks, but he was ready to go
back when needed.) And, it will cost more lives before this war is
over. That's the nature of war dontchaknow.

I don't give a **** WHAT the reason was for going to war, but we ARE
at war and we should be at war to beat these *******s. Iraq is just a
battle right now. We will lose this war with a fractured nation - Red
against Blue as Tatosian likes to say. We're all in the same boat and
the sob is leaking badly with people like the leadership of the Dems
complaining but not coming up with any solutions. It's "Bush is
wrong. Bush lied. We need to set a date to get out of Iraq," etc.
etc. etc. But NO ideas. No ideas on how to deal with these killers
who want us all dead or converted to Islam. You and yours got a
prayer rug?

Man, you libs are gonna be ****ed when the US becomes a theocracy.

"But NO ideas" How about saving the US from becoming a faschis
oligarchy run by a bunch of nazi wannabes. Sounds like a great ideal
to me. The country is being destroyed so the ragheads are winning.
By the way WTF is a grand nephew?

anyway, my point is this: until the democrat party comes up with
someone who can successfully communicate the fact that george bush, et.
al., are driving an agenda that is totally opposed to the interests of the
economic middle and lower class southerners of all ages, we all will be
burdened with he and his like for the duration.

I've heard this over and over from "liberal" upper-class people
(often at academic conferences). It is totally wrong (IMO, of course).

Until the democratic party realizes that _economics_ is not the
main factor in voting choice for middle and lower class voters, they
will be stuck losing. The main factors are embodied in that loaded
word "values". Now we can talk all we want about how the republicans
violate their supposed values, how they lie and cheat and steal
and create a total inversion of their campaign "values", and a lot
of it I'd agree with, but they put their finger on what drives
voter choices. If all the democrats can retort with is "but _we_
are the party of your economic self-interest", they'll lose
again...and again...

Ignorance, prejudice, racism, misogyny and homophobia are not
"values". The Democrats cannot abandon civil rights, women's
rights, gay rights and the separation of church and state and
still be Democrats. Almost half the voters in America believe
that Man was created, as is, less than 10,000 years ago. That
means almost half the voters are ignorant, superstitious morons.
But of course you can't tell them so and expect them to vote
for you, neither can you convince them that their long-term
self-interest is better served by diplomacy and international
cooperation than bad-ass cowboy jingoism. So what's left ?

PS: My way-left friend has a bumper sticker that says "America needs
a second party", if that gives you any indication for what _real_
liberals think of the democratic party...

Your friend's bumper sticker is right on the money, unfortunately
very few would vote for that party.

hardly anything miserable about it.....shoot, I just got back from fishing!!
I responded to your post with a point by point rebuttal. All were
serious....well, the theocracy thing was a reach, but when things like the
Schiavo thing go on, it DOES seem like a religious agenda is at work.
Anyhow,
I stayed civilized and get THIS in return?? Admittedly, I got a little testy
in the other thread when you suggest that History will just love old
Georgie-Boy, but still, give out more civil replies that this trash......

In this case, you ignorant asshole, it is an honorable man who chose to
give the ultimate sacrifice for his nation and its people -- something
you are incapable of understanding.

cheers (to the others)
