That it makes it one of the best kept secrets in the history of angling. Wolfgang who, in the interest of maintaining the integrity of the last few good REALLY secret spots, won't mention books, advertising brochures, professional guides, lodges, TV fishing shows, hero shots, trip reports, good buddies, brothers-in-law, uncles, state departments of natural resources (or fish and game or whatever), roads, bridges, aerial photos, satellite imagery, gps, trails, peer reviewed journal articles, visible fishing gear, eavesdroppers, binoculars, maps, local chambers of commerce, fly shop owners, fishing clubs, bait containers, footprints, parked cars.....or open water, It's a good thing you didn't mention any of those. In particular satellite imagery. If you had, someone might have come up with something like this: http://tinyurl.com/ytsugx Of course since I'm all for keeping a fishing spot secret, I won't tell which one of those islands it is. Chuck Vance (no, really ... you don't have to thank me) LOL! brians |

![]() "jeff" wrote arrive in bozeman late at night on the 8th, then staying at the howlin mad moon the 9th through 11th...have to find a spot on the 12th...then back to howlin on the 13th. move to the slide inn on the 14th, 15th, 16th, back to bozeman on the 17th and leave early morning 18th. Do you fish only the "unknown river" and it's "miller's archipelago" ? I have arthritis in an ankle that makes "unknown river" access generally more painful than fun. I go over there a day or two each year, just for "been there done that" rights, but it isn't a favorite with me. I'm likely to be camped somewhere over around Last Chance that whole time period if you get lonely, and want to be frustrated by fish, as opposed to catch fish. I say "likely to be" because exact plans and fishing seem a bit bitter when mixed ... at least to my taste. |

you thinking of coming over? I want to go sometime over the summer and the period 8-18 July is as good a time as any, I suppose. If I make it, I guess I'll try to find a campsite at Cabin Creek. Doesn't the bacon-of-the-gods place have cabins too? - JR |

![]() "jeff" wrote ....it would be great to finally meet you and to observe a bit of your efforts in solving the great mystery. "solve the great mystery" !!! crap now ya got me nervous ... let's be clear here .... I SUK as a fly fisherman fwiw, "your" time frame is often one when the always tough and technical Ranch gets very slow to boot. The Flavs are over, the callibaetis and ants ain't arrived yet, the weather is too "good" to make the PMDs a reliable hatch and only the spinner falls and some caddis can be "counted on." Without bugs, and the right bugs in the right quantity, the Ranch is nearly hopeless. If we get together, the Madison or a trip into the Park probably makes more predictable sense .... I "don't mind" getting skunked a few days in a row on the Ranch but I'm not on a two week vacation I'm actually toying with the idea of moving to the Missouri about mid-July for two weeks .... I understand it's starting to fade and fall out of popularity, which would be a great improvement for the place. The few times I've fished there it had incredible numbers of rising fish and only slightly greater numbers of drift boats, each with a full load of "count and whoop" style fishermen. And the "rest of the day" ain't much there as it runs by a freeway and there is little in the way of "pretty" near by .... but it does have lots of very big trout ... lots. Anyway, the Ranch is what it is and a sparse few of us genuinely love it. But most people I meet are just there "place name collecting" The North Fork of the Snake aka, Henry's Fork, has provided me with more truly great fishing memories AND more days being soundly defeated than any river I've fished ... and I've been to the majority of the more popular Western 'destinations" It's not a place to spend a single day taking hero pictures to show around the office, rather one to patiently study and treasure over time. |

Doesn't the bacon-of-the-gods place have cabins too? - JR it does...campfire lodge resort ... but i already tried, and it's booked. danl and willi camped in a more remote, and i think prettier, less crowded area on that other creek (beaver creek?) nearby. i think it was free. also...there is probably camping room in my places at mad moon and slide (there's an extra bed in the room i have on the night of the 14th), and you're welcome to any open spot on the floor... i'm still trying to find a spot for the night of the 12th though. jeff |
