In my life I have missed out on a lot of things putting my family first.
But I wouldn't hesitate in a second to keep it that way.

delicately trod...

IOW, he ****ed up, lucked out, ****ed up the luck-out, and now, you're
wondering how to accommodate your schedule around his irresponsible
double-play...OK...I'm curious - how are you planning to rationalize
(with a heavy dose on the "ration") that he's going to learn a
motherflockin' thing from this...? Why not just call wayno and fire
up the checkbook, retainer-wise? You asked for opinions, so here's
mine: He's a college kid who got caught improperly operating a what
amounts to a deadly weapon, not some toddler who spilled his milk.
Leave it to him to figure things out, and if he's not set and legal
to leave when planned, tough **** for him.


Hmmmm, uh, no - not for me, at least. There are plenty of other ways to
teach the lessons, but I think there is more to be gained by taking Son on
the fishing trip. At that age, you never know when the interests and life
will shift, and Joe could miss out on what may be the last fishing trip with
his son - at least for a while. Coming up soon are all the interuptions of
father/son relationships - you know, serious girlfriends, jobs, etc. Take
the time with him while you can, Joe, and whenever you can. I can't recall
someone ever telling me they spent too much time with their children. ;-)

True, true. All the time I've spent with my children here in ROFF has
exacted a heavy toll on my personal life.......but I don't begrudge them a
single moment of it.

You are correct, of course. I'd as soon not go at all as not take him
along. Being with him is the purpose of the trip; fishing is only the
excuse.

Sounds to me like you're more interested in going than he is, but that's
besides the point.

If it was me, and I wanted to entertain both options, I'd be calling
Malinda and making sure she's willing to accommodate the 4AM check-in.

fingers crossed So long as he stays out of traffic court for a year,
there are no insurance ramifications for the PBJ. He paid the fines,
court costs, & course fee out of his own pocket, amounting to about 20
hours at his pay rate. I expect that's a pinch he'll feel. :-)

Not more interested, just different interested. For me, I've been
doing this for 15+ years; & sometimes the logistics part gets old,
more so now that there are two of us to coordinate. It's still new &
fun for him. Once the reels start singing though, it's all worth it.

If it was me, and I wanted to entertain both options, I'd be calling
Malinda and making sure she's willing to accommodate the 4AM check-in.


My expectation is that I'll arrive at Altmar about the time most
guests will be dragging their asses out of bed in the morning anyway.
Malinda is cool with the late arrival, so long as I don't wake *her*
up. :-)

Ah...the ol' Harry Chapin ration...alization...

Hey, maybe some punishments do "hurt" the parent more than it "hurts"
the child, but it seems that at the end of the day, it's what _helps_
the child that matters...and notice I didn't say he shouldn't be allowed
to go, only that his going (as originally planned) be conditioned on his
straightening out the situation he created...you know, sorta like
responsible adult-type people have to do...
