We have the world's worse dial-up so I know I'm looking at having to get something else ... DSL and cable aren't available here but I see signs for Clearwire and some other satellite or radio deals around the area ( is there a 'best' type of broadband for the real wire impaired that live a little too far out? ) I'm sittin' here with a big grin just thinking about how happy my wife will be G ( until the bills arrive ) You just need a package that gives you the functionality you require. http://support.skype.com/index.php?_...ails&_i=1 417 Some low resolution cams will even work on dial-up, but it is difficult to determine which beforehand. Many satellite and radio solutions are quite expensive. Check to see if your television provider offers internet facilities. Many cable companies now offer this functionality on their cables. Some other info which may be of use to you; http://www.esensualstudios.com/webcam/camtutorial.php This will work on dial-up; http://www.softpedia.com/get/Interne...atWebcam.shtml Costs 69$ to buy it, but you can try it free for thirty days first. There are other solutions out there as well, but it is impossible to list them all here. TL MC |

I'm told there is a 5 hour difference between there and here ( hard to believe, we're all 'on the right coast' g ) so maybe my wife could visit a cafe here ( or use the connection at work ) to talk to him late in her day, since it would be 5 hours later for him Regardless of what end(s) used a cafe or other public broadband that is a good idea ... thanks for bringing it up, as it hadn't occurred to me |

![]() "Larry L" wrote in message ... 1) The kid goes off the Chile before long. When he returns from there he is talking of "a Fulbright in South Korea." 2) His mother will suffer greatly from his absence and I love her so I want to help, if possible. 3) She thinks there is some way for the two of them to "talk to each other and see each other at the same time, using the Internet and web cameras" This sounds like science fiction to me, but I'm intentionally pretty sheltered from the modern, connected, world. 4)But, I know many of you are out there are on the cutting edge of that connectivity. So, I'm asking for links and pointers on where to look and what to search for in the way of using the Internet for a mom and her kid to stay touch. I honestly don't even have a clue what to type into Google to get started. Thanks Larry L P.S. We will be shopping for a laptop ( or two ) in the near future for the kid and maybe for me when I'm traveling .... suggestions? The most commonly used program is 'Yahoo Messenger" commonly known as 'YM' You can use your webcams (when purchased they come with the appropriate software) and even have voice w/live cam conversations. Buy a cam, install the software...download yahoo messenger and you are ready to go. I use it with people all over the world and it works pretty good....I'd be glad to help you walk through the process. However...if you want to do BOTH voice and VIDEO you will both need a high speed connection... if one is on dial up you can still text message most rapidly....best of all it is free. No cost for the call. You know, that reminds me of a picnic I went to in a little town called Batangus, a few hours south of Manila in the Philippines. Anyhow these girls all had webcams and-........never mind..... john...just buzz me if you need help... |

![]() "Denis Lamy" wrote in message ... Mike a écrit : http://www.skype.com/allfeatures/videocall/ What mike said. ;-) I teach that stuff, Skype is the best for one on one contact. A good webcam is essential, but mostly an excellent Internet connection with High Bandwith for video conversation. Sound only demands much less bandwith. A university campus is an excellent place to connect to Internet with a High Bandwith. For home, that's another stroy, depends a lot on the local ISP. Hope this help. -- Hope to read you soon, Denis www.uqtr.ca/~lamyd You'll have to eat the SPAM to E-mail personally, I have t say that it is a toss up between skype and yahoo....skype does have a few more features, but I seldom use them... john |

I haven't done the research but I don't believe there is a five hour time difference....look up the time zones... Here is something you might consider...YOU get yourself a laptop, a cam...and at the appointed time you and the Mrs. take a trip to the big city where you can visit a Panera Bread or a Starbucks or a Books and Company who offer free Wi-Fi. (wireless internet...you'll need to get a card for that). This will be a high speed internet connection, solve all of your download problems and you can chat with the boy just fine.... Now this is the most important part...you know that she is going to be online for two or three hours so it is critical that you pick a place with good fishing nearby.. ....everybody's happy! ......ahhh.....john |

Yep, California It's 4 hours difference right now, 5 sometimes ( depending on DST or not ) ..... just checked it on 2 time zone websites ... it is hard to believe BUT I also discovered that ALL of China is on one time even though it covers many 'time zones' ... this stuff is not as mathematical and based on degrees and angles as I had assumed Larry L |
