From the AP link at the NY Times:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The nation's first genetically altered

household
pet -- a fish that glows in the dark -- is set to begin appearing in

stores
next month everywhere except perhaps California, the only state with a

ban
on lab-engineered species.

On Wednesday, the California Fish and Game Commission is scheduled to

take
up an application from Yorktown Technologies of Austin, Texas, to market
the GloFish in California.

How long before these show up in Bait Shops??

More to the point, how long before these show up in the wild?

Lake Ontario shiners?

Oooh, that's nasty. But our problem isn't errant
particles as such, it's errant molecules. Sure,
we're the proud caretakers of ManhattanProject
tailings. But it's Love Canal, just upstream from
the mighty Niagara Falls, and other dumps, waiting
to be discovered upon the demise of the chemical
plants sitting on top of them, that provide the true
curisoities in our neighborhood. When we haul in
a fish on Lake Ontario we look for growths, not
glows. It makes one wonder about the medical
histories of long-term employees of the Maid of
the Mist boats, rugged craft that spend sooo
much time in the spray and fog at the foot of the
Falls.

that is scary.....

it amazes me at times that we (and i say we, as the human race...
particularily the "industrialized" human race) subscribe to the
chemo concept..... better chems, better life.

sorry trip and forty, i'm not speaking here of the ingestion
chems, i'm blathering about the "dupont" (i use the term "dupont"
as a descriptive term for all chemical manufacturers and
processors, not singularily the CT corp, dupont) wonders that
make all of our lives so blissful and wonderful.

flyfishing.... hmmm.... to name a few....

graphite....

nickel & silver....

polymers....

flashabou....

these elements, compounds, & finallized product may (they most
likely do) cause health problems for the people that are
associated with them industrially.

well hell bill, what's the deal?

the deal is that in modern society, the philosophy, perhaps the
aberrant philosophy, is that we as a society try to make life as
easy, comfortable, and most importatly, entertaining as
possible.... for thy ownself.... gawdamn, the perfect conundrum.

certain factions, "faceless" corporations, realize that their
survival and well-being is best served by the production of these
chems and products to make life just rosy and toasty for the rest
of us.... hell, for all of mankind.

am i condemning? i really don't have that answer.... 'tis the way
it is today and i fear that we must suffer the tumors that grow
on or in us for the comforts that we enjoy.... i for one, do
enjoy my "plastic" flyfishing tools....

My guess is that they will have no chance in the wild.

i would think that is a good guess stan..... they will be fodder....
here in the south for sure.

There are a number of "designer" fishes out there now. "Designer"
Atlantic Salmon have been submitted to the FDA for approval. The company
that developed them has standing orders for The Atlantic Salmon have
gotten most of the press but there are over 35 different "species" being
developed. There are engineered carp and tipalia that have been
developed and are in production in China and Cuba.

i doubt that it would work..... illegal dumping is prevalent.
hell, just saw what appears to be a freshly dumped dilapidated
range or dishwasher down a barren leaf hillside coming home the
other evening.... most likely op's deer stand.

But watching people haul out fish 2 - 5
miles downstream from Love Canal, fish that are known
to be chock full of chemical pollutants, to take them
home to eat them, shows that there are fundamental
disconnects that we are not likely to overcome any
time soon.

gotta respect darwinism.

Dupont;s stockholders are in good shape
for the time being.

yeah, i'm probably one.... don't really know fer sure, but i'd
wager that one of my/her (shmbo) mutuals has it in the portfolio.

wally, will the madness ever abate?

It says on their website that they are selectively bred zebra fish.
http://www.glofish.com/about.asp#5

I was expecting some genetically modified creature. Rainbow trout the skin
of which had the chromatophores from a squid or cuttlefish. The fish could
flash signals to you such as; fast red flash- wrong fly, flashing yellow-
bad cast ROTBLMAO, slow green - I'm hungry.
I was in an aquarium once and showed some kids that the squid would turn red
if you held some red next to the tank wall, yellow if something yellow etc.
Successive groups of kids kept the things going for a couple of hours I
wonder if squid suffer from pallet depletion.

Hmmm, do the salmon die after they spawn? A king salmon that would not
die after spawning would be kind of cool. Can this be done?

No offense Steve, but your response is what makes the possibility of
having our streams and lakes full on Frankenfish. I know people like to
catch BIG fish but ****.................

Here's a little story I wrote for ROFF a number of years ago that might
make my point.
