"Fred" wrote I have the exact same opinion With all the groups fishing, music, photo There isn't much happening FB seems, to me, to be a decent way to have a type of small talk chatter with already known "acquaintances." My real friends and I exchange phone calls and private e-mails to keep in touch, and FB seems much too public for serious, personal, interaction. Facebook has become very popular with the young adults who frequent Stanley. It's a seasonal place -- practically deserted now, but hopping in the summer, with lots of seasonal workers (river guides and so on) who disperse in the winter. Facebook provides a way for them to keep in touch that's much better than mere email. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

It's a seasonal place -- practically deserted now, but hopping in the summer, with lots of seasonal workers (river guides and so on) who disperse in the winter. Facebook provides a way for them to keep in touch that's much better than mere email. That usage makes great sense. My son is on it, he tells me, ( I haven't looked ;-) and tells me he uses it to keep up with friends spread out over the world ( many are International Studies majors and U.of Pacific promotes overseas study to all, regardless of major ) .... the whole group seems to stay in touch, as a group, and I can see that as a real benefit ... for him many of these contacts are unbroken since about 3rd grade and I think it's great he's not allowing distance to promote distant in his relationships. I guess my outlook on 'friend' is unusually confining but I can't imagine searching for people from my past and 'friending' them on FB as they seem to suggest over and over. If we were actually, truly, current friends, sure, but 'used to vaguely know' or 'friend of somebody I vaguely know' .... I'm too stiff. For instance, I see Willi and a few others that I greatly enjoyed here, on FB, but I'd never send a friend request ... cause we ain't friends ( I guess I AM pretty stuffy about that word 'friend', maybe the next bit will help explain why I separate friend and acquaintance so firmly ) Dog training is an odd job, partly, in that it's all consuming, 24/ 7/ 365, and 100% all of my, non-family, acquaintances for 30 years were also potential customers. That results in a type of 'doing business' distance from 100% of everyone. Now that I have moved out of that circle the dozens of people I know in it have no reason to be interested in me, or vice versa. Thus retirement was far more than quitting working, it was also a transition from having lots of people around ( I used to get sick of it, at times .... I had a whole group get up and follow me to the out house at one field trial when I neglected to tell 'my followers' where I was going ... you'd have to play field trials to understand a pro's role in it's quirky culture ;-) ) to being alone except for my closest family. I like alone, and seem to be unusually comfortable with myself compared to many I observe, but passion wants to be shared and I have a passion for a few things and not many ways to share it with people that would really give a **** ( I've tried here, a few times, and been attacked as a self inflating hatching matching elitist or some BS ). I don't mean to belittle FB. I'm continuing to give it a try. I got sidetracked today, putting a new hitch on my travel trailer to support my bike rack and never got to the 'Millpond' One amusing thing is that my trailer is one of those toy boxes designed to haul ATVs, but I've got the hauling area converted to tying room and have to hang my bike on the back ;-) There, a bit of personal info, and personal humor ... in MY case anyone that would see the same posted to my 'wall' will see it here ... so I'm not going to load FB to post the same personal trivia. Larry L ( who apologizes for the meandering and reflections ... that's really what real friends, not cyber friends, are supposed to listen to ;-) |

One thing my company pursues is "reverse mentoring." This is the Web
2.0 folks getting us old guys up to speed on modern "conveniences." I want to get up to speed before they assign me some 22 year old buck to teach me how to suck eggs. Frank Reid |

Naw, naw, naw...they could just as easily assign you a 22 year old cutie who doesn't know anything about technology and he could teach her a few things... HTH, R ....about technology, I mean... --riverman |
