A trip to Cuba for bones, permit, whatever.

I've spoken (e-mail) to an outfitter and it *is* possible. I would
have to fly to, say, Mexico (Cancun) first, and then to Cuba. No visa
is necessary to visit either Mexico nor Cuba. The trick would be to
avoid having Cuban authorities stamp my passport. You can go in and
out of Cancun without a passport - proof of citizenship would be at
least two identification cards (military retire and driver's license).

My question to you and others is: Do you know of any U.S. citizen
going to Cuba to fly fish?

Although I am fishing a couple of days a week, I am beginning to get
cabin fever and it isn't even November. Golf doesn't help in the very
least. I'm having hip replacement surgery on December 8, so I should
be roaring to go by February.

Any thoughts, RW, roff?

Cuba is "Definitely" on my list
However if I were to go I would do more than fish.

So on a long trip and a somewhat expensivem trip like this
I would have to go w my wife Joanne
We love Cuban music and the culture excites both of us

Perhaps not as good, but it would be legal. *When would you be
available for a trip?

I may be pulling out the checkbook for a deposit on that one at the
end of the week. I assume you are using Frontiers?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Yeah, I'd remember that speech for some light conversational

No, not Frontiers. I have been talking with Cuba on the Fly.

I suppose Cuba might have great flats fishing, but so do the
Seychelles, Andros, los Roques, etc., so I don't feel the need to do
something illegal. I also don't like the idea of fishing off a boat
for a week, which is the way I understand it works at Jardine de la
Reina, the premier Cuban destination.

That said, the US Cuba policy is stupid and counterproductive, held
hostage to a Cuban American swing vote in a swing state (Florida).

When it's legal I'll probably go.

The place I was looking at is wading in the flats. I would like to go
to the Seychelles, but the price of getting there makes it almost cost
prohibitive. Los Rogues looks better and better, or at least until
Cuba opens to Americans.

What's your idea for a good bonefish rod/reel? I have a 7 weight which
I used in TdF for sea run browns, but I am thinking an 8, or even a 9
weight would be better, especially to cut through any wind.

I have a friend who regularly went to Cuba until he passed a few
months ago. He was a musician and a well known regional painter. He
apparently worked it thru a "special" travel agent in NYC, a heavy "R"
contributor who got a sinecure. Others went as "artists" using that
connection. Don't know how you would do it "legally" now. Maybe find
out if a "D" contributor inherited the sinecure?

I use a 4-piece 8wt Sage Z-Axis tip action with a 9wt sharkskin line
and an Abel Super 8 reel. Works for me.
