As the hatch waned for the day, so did the
fishing. I had covered less than 200 yards of water in about three
hours and had easily had my best afternoon of the year.

good grief. in three hours on hazel creek, me and ol pj roberts would
have moved upstream at least a half a mile.

I've never seen Hazel Creek, Wayno; I think stream width and rate of
advance are inversely related.

Besides, why move if you're catching fish?

I found a stretch of water below Fisherman's Paradise that was deserted, except
for a few anglers far downstream.

Vince, what the hell did you do -- shoot 'em all?

Nope! I'm innnocent! Innocent, I tell ya!

This early in the spring, especially on cool days during the week,
it's not extraordinary to find Spring Crick uncrowded.

Steve usually fishes on Tuesdays, his "day off" at the shop. The day
he's discussing was probably the 23rd. The high that day was 48.

I don't see too many other guys on the steram when it's 48 or less.

(I realize that up there in the sub-Arctic, where the temp never even
reaches 48, you guys are tougher than we are.)

You mean pj would've covered half a mile, the jury is still out on
you, counsellor.

well, you must understand i was talking about covering that

distance in,
say, 1978...

Hell, me and Jeffie and the general covered that distance in under a
day.

Wolfgang
and in that very place.

this is one of the major differences i've noted in nc fishing and trout
fishing in pa and maine - even out west, some folks target good spots
and await hatches, though i've been fortunate to tag along with warren
and willi on some fine trout hikes up streams in idaho and montana.

most of us weaned on tarheel trout like to move up the stream. the
movement is required because of the few fish holding in any one area,
sparse hatches, and it's impossible to sit over one spot and
productively trick the trout (except on certain delayed harvest
stretches - wally and i once stood in the watauga gorge section during a
rainstorm and caught 20 or more stupid fish out of a single run).
movement is necessary...so it's what we are accustomed to. but, even if
it wasn't required, i prefer the movement. i've never liked sitting on
a spot on a stream, or even when bass fishing. i love seeing the next
bend of the stream, the changes in flow and landscape. there's
excitement in the anticipation of what lies ahead.
