Strike Putty?

My experience is similar to that already mentioned. If you don't need a
lare piece, ie you have a small weight and unweighted fly, it works pretty
good. However if you're fishing with a lot of weight, and you need a large
piece to float it, it usually comes off when you cast.

The only times I've found strike putty to be useful in when I'm fishing
emergers just under the surface, or very small dry flies that I can't see.

I carry it but don't use it much. I use a smear of it on the tippet or
leader knots to help locate a small dry under harsh lighting or when I'm
drifting an emerger or soft hackle just under the surface. I serves as a
visual indicator but isn't a bobber like other indicators.

I find it quite useful for those times where I want to have some sort of
visual reference of my leader without having a float attached. a little dab
on the leader is highly visible, and I use it frequently when I'm fishing
emergers or wets just below the surface or when I am fishing a dry fly
smaller than a #22 and sometimes when I'm high stick nymphing as an added
aide.

Never mind. Now I have ANOTHER problem: My significant other has decided two
things. First, she's been looking for a hobby, and she thinks fly tying
could be the Next Big Thing. And second, she thinks the colors of the ones
in the store were not exciting enough. She's from Puerto Rico. I can see it
coming now: A box full of 12" long "flies" made from bright green parrot
feathers. Later: "Oh yeeeeeeeeah....these'll work great. For marlin". :-)
