That's also my reaction to it. I find it bizarre that companies can
advertise their name on products and sometimes command a higher price by
doing it. I guess that's riverman's "trendy" argument personified.

It certainly falls right in line with it. I read a book (I believe it was
"The Want Makers", but I'm not certain; I read a lot of books on this back
when it was 'cool' g) where they explained that, once something becomes a
'must-have' item (especially for adolescent consumers), then the labels get
outsized specifically for the free advertising. They calculate the amount of
lost revenue from folks like Cyli who are put off by being walking
billboards and determine that there are enough people who want it known
that they are wearing the latest fashion to make up for it, and then some.

Not sure how well that applies to fly gear. Sage and Simms are "trendy"
but both companies make high quality (although pricey) products. Some
people may buy their products to be "in" but I think most people buy

While I realize the fact that you "never bought a pair" doesn't mean someone
didn't give you a pair, etc., but the implication is that you have not owned a
pair. If that's true, how do you say that "their top of the line waders are the
best in the market?"

But that aside, there are lots of things that are, if not the best in the
market, certainly among the best, but that doesn't mean that your average user
needs or will EVER get the useful life out of such items. If they allow
themselves to be objective, most folks have a pretty good about how much use
they'll be able to get from an item - take the waders, for example. What
percentage of buyers of these, would you guess, actually _need_ "the best in the
market?" And a SWAG is fine - it's sorta rhetorical, anyway. And perhaps more
informative, what "minimum level of use" would make these a economically-prudent
decision - i.e., busy guides who fish themselves a lot, too, OK, a person who
knows they'll only need them 1-2 a year, no. From what I know about you, if you
can't justify them, damned few fishers could.

out. They're a trend in their own right, if you see what I mean by
phony.


So exactly where do you justify trendiness here? Seems like you decide on
the value and merits of something before you buy it, rather than whether or
not 'everyone is doing it'. That's what I'm talking about.

I try to. But it's just as weird to avoid something trendy, just
because of it being trendy as it is to get it because it's trendy.

My fav canoe and camping shirt used to belong to one of my buddies and
his wife passed it on to me when it got too tatty for him to wear to
work. So I wore it to work for a year or two and then it had to go on
the river. The elbows are going, so soon it'll become short sleeved.
OTOH, I whined and begged a couple of fishing shirts our company was
giving for promos off my boss and actually bought two more on sale at
Gander Mountain last year, so they're in good shape.

What they gain from some of my sister-in-laws and one of my daughters
makes up in one week to one month what they've lost on me in several
years time.
