True Dave, and a good point!
Thanks for your insight and your participation. RLM "Dave Martel" wrote in message ... "Richard Lee Merritt" wrote in message news:%BnAf.1345$zh2.1059@trnddc01... If I had to choose a second, I think it would be RL Winston Boron IIx. --Richard Lee Merritt www.RichardLeeMerritt.com Well Richard...that is a very hard question to answer because the paramaters are so wide. If you mean *trout* rod...it's a Sage XP 590-4. But here near the coast of Maine we do as much (or more) salt Striper fishing than we do trout...and for that it's an old (1st Generation) Sage RPLX (no i or Xi2) 990-3. For Bass and Bonefish a Scott STS 907-3. So the answers to your question would generate perhaps a bit more concensus if the paramaters get narrowed a bit. Dave M |

Ken, you wrote So you see it's not really practical to have but one or
two favorites. I totally agree, I have several rods for different species and situations. I guess what I was getting at is if you had to choose 1or 2. I am mostly interested in the manufacturer part of the answer. Thanks for your comments Ken! Have a great day! Richard Lee Merritt "Ken Fortenberry" wrote in message om... Richard Lee Merritt wrote: POLL: I am curious what your favorite fly rod is? ... If I were to reply, the fly rod I'm using at the moment, that wouldn't be as smartassed as it sounds. There are many variables, sitting in a canoe or standing, wide open casting or heavy cover, calm day or wind blowin' like hell, fishing size 24 midges or heaving half a ton of deer hair etc. etc. So you see it's not really practical to have but one or two favorites. In no particular order: In a canoe fishing for bluegill: Winston IM6 9' 3wt Standing in a gale fishing for trout: Sage 590-4 RPL Standing in a wide open stream fishing for trout: Sage 490-4 LL Crawling on my belly fishing for brookies: Winston IM6 7.5' 3wt -- Ken Fortenberry |

Thanks for the detailed comments Mike-- I really appreciate it, and I
enjoyed reading it as well. Richard Lee Merritt. "Mike Makela" ten.tsacmoc@alekamm wrote in message ... "Richard Lee Merritt" wrote in message news:%BnAf.1345$zh2.1059@trnddc01... POLL: I am curious what your favorite fly rod is? ... Sage 590 RPL 2 piece. Although I have since bought a fews rods that negat my use of that first great sage rod, I will never part with it. Will make for a good rod for the boys to break in on. Great all around rod, not in the same class as the SP for line control, but got the job done for 10 + years of constant use. Made the great leap in understanding the difference better equipment can make and then the SP matched that leap, two fold, years later. Still a proponent that you don't need the best equipment to be the best fisherman, but it can help reduce the work you need to exert, having a perfectly matched rod. What are you fishin' with these days? When the conditions are right, Thomas and Thomas Paradigm 8 foot 3 weight two piece. For me, the smoothest tool possible for a cast that's hard on a rod. Enough backbone to land 19-20 inch fish w/light tippet, but light, and delicate, enough to cast all but the very micro sized flies. I have too admit both the SP and Paradigm are a bit overpriced for me right out of the store. If you've got the cash to throw around, they're guaranteed to thrill, but was able to pick up both of them a few years ago for a very modest price by using the greatest idea of the 21st century thus far, EBay, or I still may be casting nymphs with that old RPL.
