G I'm refering to the initial post by Bob on Orvis being so expensive. If you wanna wear the name, you gotta pay the price. Does John Deer make a better tractor, no, but they have a name many farmers want to have on their tractors. When Perkins sales team sets their prices for their latest catalog, they know their stuff doesn't cost more to manufacture then Cabellas, or LL Bean. They also know that some will pay the price to wear/carry the Orvis name. So, they price accordingly. I have alot of Orvis gear. I was told long ago by a man I highly respect, that it's the best. So, now I'm hooked and won't break away even though I can't really afford it. It's called good marketing. Hi, Not much to do this afternoon, Sounds to me like you have to much time of your hands. I have to much work and no time. Grab your tool belt, I'll let you know where to show up tomorrow morning and I pay well. $12 an hour until you prove yourself and I buy lunch (my choice). Maybe after a few days you will feel good about having an Orvis gift certificate and not Walmart. $12/hr is supposed to be good? I make $25 - $60. Well, I work up a quote for a project making sure I have covered my bases (ass). Then to be safe, I double my quote and then mark it all up 25%. I smile when my customer says OK and then I get that blank-stair look when they say they thought it would have been considerably more $$. After it takes me twice as long to complete the job, fix up all the screw ups of the subs and hired help and end up making less than 10% minus my labor, I wonder if I should ever hire anyone at any price. And then I do it all over again. One hesitates to wonder whether, if you were competent and thus paid enough to attract competent help, some of your problems might mysteriously disappear. I guess you are a plumber? No, duh! I mean who else in this world could possibly make such fantastic money? Wolfgang who can't help but wonder just what a blank stair might look like.......but has a pretty good idea of where to search for the answer. |

... "JT" wrote in message ... "Wolfgang" wrote in message ... Having never owned any clothing with the Orvis label, I can't speak to the issue of their quality versus that of any other brand. However, the matter of style leaves me somewhat perplexed. How is it that Orvis clothing remains in style longer than that of any other retailer who sells the same styles? Wolfgang Good question, I suppose it's the Orvis, Patagonia, Simms... patch sown on the pocket?? I don't own any Orvis clothing either, I prefer the Columbia PFG sportswear for the money. I also like the Ex-Officio clothing, however it's generally way over priced for my pocketbook. And you? Generally, I pay no attention to brand names in clothing. Well, that's not quite accurate......generally I AVOID popular brand names, particularly when the name or logo is emblazoned somewhere on the article of clothing; I've never seen the benefit to the consumer (me) of paying for the privilege of being a walking billboard. Nor have I found, in my limited experience with popular brands, that they are necessarily more durable or stylish than many other options. I buy virtually all my clothing from the end of season sale racks at places like Target, Wal-Mart, etc., making only occasional exceptions if I happen to find something sufficiently discounted at the likes of Gander Mountain, Cabela's etc. I recently made an unwitting exception when, after looking unsuccessfully for a comfortable pair of low cut walking shoes in my usual haunts, I found a pair that fit, were comfortable and were affordable at Gander Mountain. It was only later when one of my co-workers asked if they were "Sketchers" (which I had, till then, never heard of) that I discovered they are apparently a popular brand. Incidentally, I was in the market for a new pair of shoes not because my old ones, purchased for about fifteen bucks at K-Mart seven or eight years earlier had worn out or disintegrated, but because they disappeared. As to quality, well most of the clothing items I purchase last long enough that I throw individual articles out (or, more often, donate them, still serviceable, to an organization like Goodwill Industries) only when my storage space gets crammed so full as to be frustrating, as happened recently in a move to a new apartment, or when, as I suspect happened with my shoes, someone else disposes of them for me. Wolfgang whose sartorial tastes have thus far remained blessedly free of the taint of stylishness. I'm already married with two kids, so I don't think or worry too much about being stylishly impressive. I tend to concentrate more on wearing clothing and gear that is effective. Wolgang can probably agree that knowing what to wear, when to wear it, and how to wear it are FAR more important than those items being worn being stylish. Seasons in this part of the country (Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc.) can change in the blink of an eye. Some of my favorite (and best) gear is stuff I picked up as a supply sergeant while still in the Marine Corps. The old tan poly-pros, nylon poncho liners, and glove liners are some of my best gear. No brand name on any of them. The only brand name gear I DO swear by is my Underarmor. I tried cheaper versions and it does work better for me in the conditions it is marketed for. My ALL TIME favorite no name piece of non-clothing gear is my roll of 550 chord. I keep about 20 yrds of the stuff in a zip lock with me whenever I venture out. Great for many emergencies.
