"jeff" wrote in message there was nothing in your post that required or even invited a negative comment, imo. i read it and appreciated it. thanks. Taken in isolation, his Fifty Places post is as you suggest; but coming as it did less than 24 hours following a complaint about obscene consumerism, the irony of boasting of one's fly fishing travels practically jumped out of the screen at me. Personally, I got a chuckle; but I'm not surprised at the subsequent flames and defensiveness. It *does* sound like a great book; but the timing of the review coiuld have been better. :-) Joe F. No matter what any of the long term contributors on here post, their "history", and the invariably biased views of other long term posters, largely prevents anything simply being taken objectively and simply on its merits. This is more or less independent of any particular temporal juxtaposition. Probably another reason why many people post less and less as time goes by.There is very little point in posting anything much if the only return is brickbats from the same idiots. MC |

An important part of fly fishing, for me, has imagining and anticipating a new place or a new species. (More often than not, the reality doesn't live up to the dream.) The person who gave me the book knows that, so it was a thoughtful gift. I too received the book as a gift, albeit a couple of years ago. I didn't see it as consumerish as some apparently do and read it with the same sense that I might read a national geographic. Depending on what the future holds I might get the chance to fish some of the places and perhaps might even have some success, we'll see. The person who gave it to me knew I liked to read, fly fish, and experience new things ergo I agree it was a thoughtful gift. No the book doesn't go in the same class as "On the Spine of Time" but its a nice little read none the less. Congratulations on the 18% success, I'm not even close to that. Not sure why the acrimony in this thread but if that floats some boats....... |

I received this book as a Christmas present. Naturally, I first had to see how many of the places I've already fished: Alaska -- Bristol Bay: Rainbow Trout and Silver Salmon Around Bristol Bay California: Brown and Rainbow Trout Around Greater Redding Florida: Permit off the Florida Keys (Didn't catch a permit, or much of anything) Idaho -- Last Chance: Rainbow Trout on the Henry's Fork Idaho -- Stanley: Cutthroat Trout on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River Kiribati: Giant Trevally Off Christmas Island (Didn't catch a Giant Trevally, but lots of Bonefish) Montana -- Fort Smith: Brown and Rainbow Trout on the Bighorn River Wyoming: Brown and Rainbow Trout on the Firehole River (It was too warm for decent fishing) Wyoming and Montana: Brown and Rainbow Trout on the Madison River Only 41 more to go! Too little time left. :-) On the top of my wish list is Seychelles Islands: Bonefish on St.François Lagoon. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. Here's a list of all 50 places. http://www.meosphere.com/User/WhatIt...&InfoID=231234 I checked it out of the library a couple of years ago. Nice pictures. The author writes books on were the best 50 places to do lots of things, play golf, watch birds, eat hamburgers etc. etc. I was not and am still not convinced that he knows much about fishing. Roff could come with a list of the 50 best places to fly fish that would be just as valid. I think there is a calendar on this same theme but not a many places. I can't fault the author, he's got a good scam. He gets to travel take pictures ( I don't think he takes them all), fish play golf, watch birds etc. |

(This was, however, according to the dust jacket, his first book.) Even better, he didn't even have to write the book, except for the introduction and the editing. All the entries are written by third parties, none of whose names I recognize except for Ernest Schwiebert. This guy can write off all his travel expenses, taken off the top of his earnings (from the book) before taxes. He has to check out the recommendations, right? Brilliant. As long as he sells enough books he's living the life, and the book obviously makes a natural excellent gift for someone in her life who loves fly fishing. :-) -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

Another destination in the book that sounds great, and much more affordable and accessible, is Cuba: Tarpon off Jardines de la Pinta. (Also supposedly excellent bonefishing.) Remember those two English twins (from York, IIRC) we met in Belize who'd just come from there? Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. As American citizens we'd have to break the law to go there. Isn't that ****ed up? -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

Remember those two English twins (from York, IIRC) we met in Belize who'd just come from there? Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. They were a pair! Interesting guys. They really liked Cuba. Whipray Caye was fun. The Cabrals were a fascinating family. As American citizens we'd have to break the law to go there. Isn't that ****ed up? It is stupid. I thought Fidel was a goner but the pictures I saw of him recently made him look much improved (if you can go by that). I'd be up for a Cuba trip. I think it can be done from Belize. The key is NOT getting your passport stamped. It's a vacation destination (I think number 1) for Belizians. If that's the case, you must be able to do Cuba on the cheap. I'll ask around when Susan and I are in Belize next month. Willi |
