Beginner question #12,318:
So far, two books I'm reading on fly fishing do NOT mention strike

putty.
[snip] Seriously....is
this stuff ever really useful, or do other fishermen laugh quietly when

they
see it being used?

I find it quite useful for those times where I want to have some sort of
visual reference of my leader without having a float attached. a little

dab
on the leader is highly visible, and I use it frequently when I'm fishing
emergers or wets just below the surface or when I am fishing a dry fly
smaller than a #22 and sometimes when I'm high stick nymphing as an added
aide.

Never mind. Now I have ANOTHER problem: My significant other has decided two
things. First, she's been looking for a hobby, and she thinks fly tying
could be the Next Big Thing. And second, she thinks the colors of the ones
in the store were not exciting enough. She's from Puerto Rico. I can see it
coming now: A box full of 12" long "flies" made from bright green parrot
feathers. Later: "Oh yeeeeeeeeah....these'll work great. For marlin". :-)

Au contraire, amigo. A very good fisher I know uses blue parrot
feathers for the wing cases on many of his nymphs.

Who resisted hijacking this thread by opining that no one knows how a
trout perceives colors anyway.

Maybe I can use the 12" long flies at hat decorations.

Or even at pant adornments.

I carry it but don't use it much. I use a smear of it on the tippet or
leader knots to help locate a small dry under harsh lighting or when I'm
drifting an emerger or soft hackle just under the surface. I serves as a
visual indicator but isn't a bobber like other indicators.

Same here. Seems to depend on temperature. The putty-type indicators work
better in warm weather than in cold. In really cold weather you damned near
need a coal chisel to get the putty out of the container. Also, as has been
pointed out elsewhere, it can leave a sticky residue on the line. It can be
useful when you need to make a point on the line a little more visible, but
I like yarn. Make a loop in the line, insert a little piece of colored yarn,
and you have a very good indicator.

But, Orvis sells it, so it MUST be worth having, right? :-) Seriously....is

I use the putty maily in VERY slow streams. There is a spring creek
near me that I use the putty in. You can make the indicator very small
so as not to spook the fish, and it doesn't take much to float the wee
flies I generally use there.

I use it when fishing a weighted nymph for grayling. I'd find it hard
to spot some delicate takes in low winter light without it.
