greatly enjoys fishing for walleye, pike and the like. he is coming for a
visit over christmas and wants to pick up some stuff while he's here.
what
do ya'll suggest? any help will be appreciated-

Unless he shows some inclination to really good gear, and / or likes
to blow away money, there's nothing wrong with getting a KPOS to
start. Then he's not out much if he decides he doesn't like it. 5/6
weight would probably be the most versatile for a combination of trout
and bass and panfish, though probably not heavy enough for pike or
walleye (if walleye will even come up to take flies).

Good luck on the reconciliation.

thanks, cyli

Good luck patching up the relationship with your dad.

As far a gear goes, a quick stop at WalMart would set him up for under
$100, including the license, assuming that you have the flies.

have i got the flies- by the **** load! between flies i have bought, flies
that frank senior gave me, flies big dale sent me and flies i got for
christmas, i have a stash to impress anyone. but as mark b. pointed out- i
probably will use a few favorites for the most part, and that has held true,
indeed. still, they *are* fun to look at, and lust over.......

Hi Snake,

He could get a standard 9' #5 or 6 line outfit for the lighter stuff now
and then get a larger #7-8 weight rig for those bigger fish and bigger
fliers later?

He might need a casting lesson? You might be able to hire a local fly
fishing guide/instructor to spend a day with you guys or hire a person out
of one of the local fly shops to give you and your day some instruction.

You need to get you dad to a place in the next summer where he can easily
catch some fish on a fly rod or he might just go back to spinning for
them.

Get him to take you to Montana, British Columbia or ever Alaska next
summer?

oohhh, i like that idea ;-)

Ah, you always say the sweetest things. ;-)

I may join the fly swap and never send the flies just to
drive you nuts. ;-)

....well, it'd be a short trip, I wouldn't even need to pack a sandwich.
