![]() Wayne Harrison wrote: "Jeff Miller" wrote 4. to talk about things, no doubt about it, words is what we need. however, selecting the precise words that we need to communicate effectively requires more than just talking in the unique words we know from intense study or effort, or more than just assuming that the latin names of a particular taxonomy have common meaning to a fishing audience. i suspect most fly fisher-men or -women know more about a light cahill style fly than they do about a stenacron canadense, don't you? i just thought that you ought to be aware that i will print out the paragraph, above, in order to read it at public gatherings from now until we perish, with a hope to somehow equalize the anguish that you brought to me by telling pj about my little story of he and i and the paraleptophebias on snowbird creek. for you, my friend, dante' would have described an *eigth* circle of hell... ![]() ....please use proper inflection at each reading. i find even the ridiculous can be accepted by an audience when given the correct inflection. reading the above has nearly sobered me... i must take my leave immediately. jeff ...and, dammit, you're in g'boro. i'm here 24/7. unless you're gonna be available on a more regular basis in the flesh to mitigate and share the macabre h. bosch show of pj-land, you need to cut me some slack. ![]() |

wrote: (Greatly snipped to make a slightly off thread point) I think that to a large extent the demographics and needs of "a group of fishermen" varies across different parts of the country Many herbalists are divided on the question of latin names. Some are convinced when they ask about a particular herb and find out that there are several herbs with the same common name. Some of them useless, some even dangerous. There would be quite a few Asian immigrants who'd be either in better health or alive today if they'd been informed enough to understand that. Stuff from one country to another that looks the same may feed you in one country and harm you in another. Stuff with the same name, same thing. If you're going to be in only one part of one country and do whatever in that part only with others who live there, common names are fine. But if you're going to eat stuff, well... Now we know the fish don't know the latin names, so all the above is moot, isn't it? But fishermen (being humans and, therefore sapient (it's in the latin name, innit?)) can observe the local insectivorous fauna and then their flys and chose. Or ask whoever lured them to that clave to point things out. And we're not going to eat the flies, so the worst that will happen is we'll be on a lake or a stream and just have the fresh air and scenery and the pleasure of being there. BTW, gotta love that Indian Joe method. -- rbc:vixen,Minnow Goddess,Willow Watcher, and all that sort of thing. Often taunted by trout. Only a fool would refuse to believe in luck. Only a damn fool would rely on it. http://www.visi.com/~cyli |

![]() "Jeff Miller" wrote larry - since i think most of your comments were directed at or in response to my rant, let me top post for convenience and say the following: I don't know what "top post" means .... I just hate it when people use fancy pancy UsenetSpeak instead of simpler language ... why do you guys do that? ..... just to make us newbies feel bad? ;-) 6. does "understanding the bugs" require a knowledge of latin names? again, if i see a yellow bug flying about, i'll try to match it in size and color and shape. Ok, since you are 3000 miles away and IF you promise to NOT tell anyone I said this. I do carry and use a seine, small magnifier, and notepad for sketches and notes when I fish and I have keyed a few bugs out, but, ...... shhhh, quiet now ...... I don't really use much Latin in my chats with other fishermen, never, if a consistently used common name such as Pale Morning Dun is available. To be honest, the main reason for most of my posts in this thread is boredom. I wrote up my "goodbye ROFF" post about 4 months ago but like TV I find I keep turning it on, out of habit, only to find rerurns of "Everybody Loves Raymond" ..i.e. endlessly repeating examples of material that was third rate the first time I saw it. Again, like TV, I find myself more and more ****ed at myself each time I turn it on ... "damn, you really do need to find something to do" ... unlike TV I can somewhat change the channel to my own 3rd rate material, fun for a time or two, but already losing appeal........ I beat a 1 1/2 pack a day straight Camels smoking habit and it's honestly a miracle I'm still alive, I used to be such an un-recovering alcoholic, but I'm sober about 20 years .... I do know how to quit, but it's damn hard unless you change environment and get away from your "triggers" ....I'm really looking forward to my trip to Idaho for the summer where temptation won't be with me ....getting away from computers is a great reason to fish . i hope to fish with or near you one of these days. no, trust me, you don't I'm, at best, an average FFer and you won't learn more than how to get hooks out of ears and hats from me. Plus, I'm a son of a bitch and very hard to get along with |

Tobacco and alcohol are pretty cheap in Idaho, and nearly universally available, except for the hard stuff on Sunday or election day, and possibly except for some FLDS enclaves. Gambling is available just across the Nevada border. TV reception can be a problem in the mountains, unless you have a clear view of the southern sky. :-) If you are leaving the temptations behind, they must be caused the boredom of your everyday life. That must suck. Believe me, Larry, I know how it is. I've been there, and I still occasionally visit that place. I'm being completely serious right now. I gather that you spent most of your life training field dogs. Not so? Do you have any dogs now? Do you, for example, take a well-trained dog or two along to Idaho? (A very dog-friendly state, BTW.) Are you so sick of making your living from them that you don't want anything more to do with them? Just curious. If it's none of my business, just tell me to **** off. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |
