reel to backing: "double" overhand knot
backing to fly line: allbright knot
fly line to leader: nail knot
leader to tippet: double surgeons knot
tippet to fly: improved clinch or uniknot

The only knot on the list that requires a tool is the nail knot. I use a
10d finish nail, but small tubes are also sold for this and if you have to
pick up one or the other, the tube is handier. Tying a nail knot without a
nail is possible but needlessly difficult, considering the low cost of a
nail.

I find the nail-less nail knot very easy to tie (much easier than with the nail)
and just as useful. It's handy to know when you can't find that pesky nail.

Those are all the knots I ever use,
'cept for the ones that tie my shoes.

I use three too, but I use a barrel knot instead of a double surgeons
just because that what I started with and I've been tying it a long
time. I did have to learn some new knots when we went fishing in the Keys.

now, i am getting myself ready for an early mornin of fishing on

hey snake, i wish you good luck this mornin'.... hope the stream
ain't blown out fer ya from yesterday's rains.

however, and i say this without malice, it ain't polite to be
mentionin' certain streams here on this forum (dem knucklehead
elitist futhamukkers will descend on them like a plague of
cicada).... that's when i get all sensitive ;-)

wally

oops- sorry wally
headed out early to unnamed creek ;-) , but damned if i could find a spot
that wasn't posted with private property-no huntin-no fishin signs. i swear
to god, i even saw one that said "jennifer- don't even THINK of fishing
here, or we will shoot your skinny white ass off!!"
disappointed, i headed to my usual alternative- i would tell ya, but then
i'd have to kill ya- G- on the blue ridge parkway. up there, it was foggy
as ****, and rainin pretty good- but there was no turning back now. i was
itchin to get into the water, and fish. i put a caddis on my line, and cast
it under some over-hanging laurels, thinking that might be a good hiding
place for fish. not five minutes in i had a bite. it was a gorgeous red
breast sunfish, t a little bigger than the size of my hand. i cast my line
back out , and between changing flies, and changing venues, it must have
been a good hour and a half of standin knee deep in water in the pouring
rain before i got another bite. i had moved downstream into some water that
was a little deeper, and heavily covered in laurels bushes. these wading
boots are great- they let me go into this rocky **** we have here, and get
just where i need to be to cast my line where i want it. bingo. here i
caught two more sunfish and two trout. the trout, however, were nothin to
brag on. they were only about five inches long. by now, i was thinking i
might should switch to a larger fly- larger catches? but as i tried to tie
my fly, i realized my hands were so cold that i couldn't even tie! so, i
headed home, my cap soaked through, my hair wet, and my shirt, vest, and
jacket soaked. i sit here shivering as i write this, and ready to get into
a nice hot shower (no, i'm not flirting :} ), and have a cup of hot coffee.
after studyin a bit for school, i think i will head back out this evenin.
this fishin stuff is great! thanks for hookin me up, frank!

Might be in your neck of the woods next month, how are the streams up north?

What works is right enough for me, I'll let you and 40 attend to the
'elite' ways. g

Not bad. We're behind on rain and it's been getting pretty warm, so
most streams are a little low and fishing is best in the morning
before things warm up.
