First, as to rec.woodworking -- have you actually looked at the
content of those posts? On any given day you have tons of spam, repeat
questions about what's the best [insert power tool here] to buy, pleas
for links to free plans for everything under the sun, debates on whether
Norm Abrams is really the anti-christ or just another Jewish carpenter,
questions on what sort of stain should be used on cherry, etc., etc., ad
nauseum.

I just looked at rec.woodworking. It does have all of those things,
however:
1) there are fewer off topic posts than here (take a look)
2) far less bickering
3) *more* commercial spam, but not that much more

You seem to complain (about rec.woodworking) that questions about
what stain to use are a bad thing. I say that's what the newsgroup
is meant to deal with. Here we get so little on topic conversation
of any kind a little elementary stuff would be a welcome change.

Yes, all of usenet has been diminished by the allure of
interactive forums that allow icons, images, etc.

But many usenet groups are doing just fine, despite all that.
rec.woodworking was just one example. ROFF has lost so
much traffic it seems to be heading for oblivion .

Is that a troll or an observation worth talking about?

Interesting that you only chose to respond to one tiny portion of my
post. Did you miss the rest of my point (i.e., a newsgroup is what you
make of it; if you don't like the content you do something about it)?

Did you also miss where I discussed the likely reasons why there is
more volume on the wreck?

BTW, my name is Chuck Vance, not Someone. It was at the bottom of
my post, but I guess you just didn't make it that far.

Tim,

We're hoping to get there later this year. I've got a trip planned
to the Smokies in mid-May, but Carol was hoping we could make it back in
late August or early September. Now that she's a grandma, she feels the
need to get back every year. Which of course is OK with me as long as
we get to the Pass to see her dad (and for me to fish). :-)

I should know more a little later in the year. So you been doing
any fishing these days or is it still too cold? ;-)

Chuck Vance (and that, my friends is how you make a positive
contribution to the newsgroup ... good job, Tim :-)

Sorry about the "someone" reference to you in an earlier post.
I use Google Groups, to read usenet, and it's hard to use.
I lost *my* cool and yelled at Ken Fortenberry last week,
because of Google Groups confusion about who said what.
I use it because that's all I have.

I've allowed myself to get sucked into off-topic slug fests
in the past. And in this case I seem to have started one.
But in general my record is good. For the past 15 years
I've mostly asked or answered on-topic questions, and I did
(do) my best to ignore the cat fights. (my first post was
to rec.fishing in 1993.....preceded only by the halfordian
golfer, to my knowledge...among still breathing participants)

I think the newsgroup would be a healthier place if more
readers made the same effort.

Work, more than weather, has been keeping me off the water. Not healthy.
daily high temperatures are running 16 - 17 (Celcius...never could
figure out farenheit) over the weekend, so the Crow is open. I am
planning on getting out next week.

I understand. In fact, I might not post at all if I had to rely on
Google groups for posting to ROFF. (Oh, shutup whoever said that might
be a good thing. :-) No offense taken. I think we've all been a bit
on edge with some of the madness going on around here.

I'm a relative newbie here (2002?), but go back with rec.woodworking
to about 1996 and back with some political and music groups to BITNET
days (maybe 1991). I'll admit to getting involved in offtopic stuff and
some catfights, but my main reason for coming here is for information
and trip reports.

And frankly, I don't ever recall seeing you involved in offtopic
stuff ... well, maybe a political thread or two. :-)

I think the newsgroup would be a healthier place if more
readers made the same effort.

Sure, and that's really all you can ask. But it's tough to avoid
when some of the other stuff someone comes along wearing a "kick me"
sign and says "I dare you, you bunch of arrogant arseholes". :-}

Chuck Vance (who will make an honest effort to sprinkle in some
ontopic stuff amidst the other nonsense)

That's the convention around here, it's a courteousy to the
reader to post in the conventional manner.

If you're happy with the newsgroup, then there is nothing more I
need to say to you on this matter, other than; "Good luck and
enjoy fly-fishing."

Well, happy enough to know the futility of complaining about
it anyway. ;-)

And thanks Tom, and right back at ya. I hope to meet up with
you on a trout stream one of these days.

I currently see ROFF as a lot like "Everyone Loves Raymond" re-runs. Like
that show, there aren't many characters you can actually like much,
basically it's a play with only antagonists, but the first time I saw any
given episode it was a little amusing. Sometimes I even chuckled the
second viewing. Now I just check to see what episode is showing and turn
off the TV.

Now, since the above is nearly certain to be taken for more than what it is,
simply an analogy for my view of this place, let me add

I HAVE received some good info here .... tippet rings from Mike, PreCip from
Ken, cheap "frogsbutt" from rw, and quite a bit more

There ARE some people here I think I'd like to meet .... wayno, willi ( was
here ), maybe YOU

I HAVE been treated well, on occasion .... Chuck made and sent me some
leaders I value time and homemade represents time...thanks Chuck, I
carry them every day I fish. rw e-mailed me info on a 'secret spot'
Warren ( was here ) offered to guide/row me on the Madison for the price of
a six pack. There were more.

I gave a Loomis 6 1/2 foot 3 wt rod to a fellow no longer here, and that I
never met. He expressed a love of small streams and I hope he enjoys it
in the type of places it was built for, my body can't do the crawls anymore.
( last I heard from him was a private mail about what a jerk Wolfie can be,
months ago.)

And, rather obviously, I'm still here, some .... hoping for an episode I've
missed.

Nice breeds nice, nasty breeds nasty .... this post can ( likely will ) be
taken as either and in either case that will be more of a projection of what
the reader wants to hear, ONTO me and my motives, than an accurate
assessment, I bet.

I hadn't given it a thought until your Raymond reference; but the
first association that popped into my head was "MASH" reruns. There
are a lot of reasons why that works for me; but I'm eager to get the
hell out of here, so I'll defer further exposition.

When this group
dies, you and Kenny will have nowhere to misbehave. People who run
them wont allow you on to any other fishing groups.

you know what, Mike? I have been posting to this place for over a decade,
and have seen the imminent death of ROFF pronounced so many times now that
it is merely amusing of you to add(for the fifth time over the past 4 years,
that I recall) your latest prediction. I'll bet it will still be here for
you to make your next moribund pronouncement a year from this date.....
Tom
