I am an inveterate reader. Some, among those who know me well, go so far

as
to say a compulsive, or obsessive reader. There are very few things that

I
have not read something about. There are very few questions that I have

not
seen addressed at one time or another, however well or poorly. And yet,
there is one nagging question that I have never seen, or heard, anyone

deal
with. I have always wondered.....do people who are severely brain damaged
know that they are .......well, severely brain damaged?

Well?

Wolfgang

Purely from personal experience, I would say that most do not. In most
cases they are incapable of making sensible comparisons. This also rather
depends on the damage of course. I know a number of people who suffered from
oxygen deprivation at birth. This resulted in various degrees of brain
damage, causing retardation, and in a number of cases, also loss of sensory
and motor functions, and also in a number of cases, actual physical damage
such as crippled hands, arms, etc.

For the most part, these people think they are normal. Those with physical
disabilities notice that they can not do a lot of things which other people
do, but at least some of them are apparently able to rationalise this to
themselves to some degree, although people with these physical disabilities
are usually far more "discontent", than those with purely mental problems.

Interesting to note also, that one is often quite unable to even discuss
some of these things rationally with those involved, as the "rational" part
of their consciousness is also invariably damaged. This often leads to them
wanting or expecting things far beyond their capabilities, or possibilities.
They of course do not see it so.

Apparently, many are quite simply unable to perceive that they are not
"normal". This is a most peculiar situation, and makes it very difficult to
work with such people, as "normal" argument, discussion, etc. is simply not
possible.

One gentleman I know quite well, who also works with such cases, advanced
the theory that there are perhaps similarities with people who are blind
from birth. They can not know what they can not see, and as a consequence,
not seeing is quite "normal" for them.

Oh, I don't know about all that. Seems to me it's that perspective thingy
again. I mean, yeah, if you work from the assumption that this is all being
done for our entertainment, then yes, it is a bit of a petty irritation. On
the other hand, if you assume that these halfwits are serious......not as
preposterous a proposition as it may first seem.......then it all becomes
vastly amusing. Um......think Snedeker with a vocabulary and a balanced
medication regimen.

2 observations

1. Gary Perez of Bluestone rod is ****ed because he got moderated or
edited on the rod board. The reason he posted it here is because he
thought he would get back at the board owner and maybe 'ruin' him by
virtue of public opinion. It would appear that he failed.

2. Any of you who aren't interested in this conversation and believe
the participants to be 'halfwits' make an interesting bunch of
halfwits yourself - why are you bothering to read and respond to
anything which you say you have no interest in? I think you actually
relish the 'drama.'

Hmmmm. This smells of a previous thread. "I know you are, but what am I?"

- why are you bothering to read and respond to

No doubt about it, but there is a very fine line between comedy and drama. Us
roff-halfwits (and I DO speak for all of us) are just trying to point out that
you and your band of halfwits crossed this line some time ago and are rapidly
approaching slapstick. Hell, we LIVE for this stuff.

A little comic relief is always welcome, no matter what the subject or
source. If you wish to construe that as "interest", well then you are
correct. If you actually read the responses to date, you will discover that
most people were merely trying to point out to dear old sapphire that he is
wasting his time posting this stuff here.

His reasons for doing so were quite obvious from the start, as were his
specious arguments. The effect on Mr.Kirkman will likely remain absolutely
zero, apart perhaps from some mild amusement on his part, as based on his
silly posts to date, nobody gives a **** what dear old sapphire has to say
about him. Not even Mr.Kirkman, as the motivation and absolutely ridiculous
basis for the posts is amply clear, and is set out very clearly in the posts
themselves.

Even supposing that everything old sapphire writes is the absolute and
unadorned truth, this by no means casts a slur on Mr. Kirkman, as he has the
perfect right to do anything he likes on his own board, and nobody with any
sense, either here or elsewhere, will disagree with that basic premise,
which our poor befuddled old sapphire apparently finds impossible to accept.

Our precious stone is obviously more than somewhat misguided regarding
"boards" specifically, and Usenet and the internet in general. He is not the
first, and he wont be the last.

For some, including myself, such behaviour is fascinating, as it gives
insight into abnormal thought processes, which are also based on faulty
reasoning. Observing such behaviour is perversely satisfying, possibly due
to its very abnormality.

The complete inability to grasp or accept obvious facts, although fairly
widespread, is not easy to observe in such glorious completeness. Here we
have a perfect example of it, not the first we have seen here, but
definitely
one of the more shining examples, and are suitably awed and curious as to
its
causes and effects. Indeed, some of us are driven to investigate even
further, in the, probably completely vain, hope of understanding how such a
thing is possible.

Practically the only way to give anybody here the impression that you are a
half-wit, is, to behave like one. In this case, all the relevant criteria
have been fulfilled.

Strange as it may seem, this newsgroup exists for no other purpose than
allowing people to read what others post. Deciding not to read some posts,
requires conscious effort, or action, and this is simply too much trouble to
take.
Many people here read every single post. Even the stupid ones. This even
provides a modicum of amusement on occasion.

Some dramas may benefit from having a large number of players. I donīt think
this one will.
