Nobody said this has been happening for years like lock lopping.

And I STILL say it's been happening for years. I made no claims as to the

rate
of occurrence,

My original question to you was about cutting locks off for *random* luggage
checks pre PA. I only said it hadn't happened to me or anyone I knew, not that
the airlines couldn't do it. They can (and could) also let the bomb squad
detonate your bag if they believe it is necessary, but I don't think they
randomly detonate a certain percentage. The difference between pre and post PA
is that pre the searches were for cause, post they are random as well as for
cause.

As an aside, I was just cleaning out my desk (well, one drawer - that alone will
take hours) and came across a July 2001 ticket pouch for America West, which
highly recommended locking all your bags. Of course they then go on to say they
may have to "remove" it in the interest of passenger safety. Now their policy
states DO NOT lock your luggage or use a TSA-recognized lock.

It's amazing how certain points in time can cause shifts in our lives, and Sept.
11, 2001 and its aftermath is right at the top of the list. I only wish the
"shoe bomber" had been the "bra bomber". It would make the airport security
check points much more bearable. ;-)
