On Tuesday my eldest got on a flight in Minneapolis heading to Philly.
From there he took a bus to Cape May, New Jersey. Destination, the
U.S. Coast Guard Training Facility. He is, even as I type this, in
Coastie boot camp.

Semper Paratus.

Only if you are from Brooklyn, or watch too much lame ass-ed David
Letterman In New Jersey, Mid Atlantic speak it is Neuuuu Jerrrrsie.
And as a kid we could always tell new kids who were from "Sow
Jerrsiee" and cruelly called them "Rebels." But now Jersey-speak is
more likely to be pronounced with an accent honed in Bangalore,
Hyderabad or sumsuch, and Sari shops are not hard to find. (IMHO That
HBO show set in prohibition Atlantic City gets lots of the nuance
right, even the NYC and Philly stuff.)

On US#1 near Rahway, one night last summer, seeking directions, 3
stops for same at gas stations drew NO, ZERO, NADA speakers of
English, or Spanish (Puerto Rican, Castillano, or Mexican), or rough
French, or rough Cheska, platoon leader or any other recognizable
patois.

And the times they are a changing on the banks of the old Raritan.

Been there. Done that. But, you knew that.

The Jersey shore is a much loved vacation spot for many in the urban
northeast, and New Jersey IS "The Garden State" after all. But not in
the winter. Even I and my 18 year old compatriots saw the humor in
that.....strolling the boardwalk in Atlantic City in December of '69.

Semper Paratus.

Many thanks for the offer. I'm not sure where he'll get stationed but
since he wants to be a Bosun's (Boatswain?) Mate his first gig will be
on a cutter until he can either strike into a training program or get
into A school next year (2011 is already filled up).

I think he'll be fine. He was really pumped up last Tuesday getting on
the plane but I imagine he's less so by now. From what we've been
reading on USCG message boards the first 4 -5 weeks are brutal but
then it all comes together. He's a tough kid. As long as his body
holds out he'll keep trying.

He's finished his first 5 weeks and got his first deployment. Off to
Honolulu with the punk. He'll be on the USCGC Jarvis, one of the big
boats. In the past they've sailed most of the northern and central
Pacific with a good amount of time spent on the fishing grounds in
Alaska.

We never met personally, but I remember the Jarvis when we were both
fresh and untried. Don't know what she's accomplished since
then.....but it's good to see that we have aged well.

Honolulu, huh? Tough duty.

giles
who remembers all to well the gritty days.....in miami beach.
