Opening day
It occurred to me that this weekend is ( I think ) 'opener' for general
trout' season here in Arnoldland. Then it occurred to me to be curious. I, personally, have hunted every day of duck season ( around 90 days ), EXCEPT opening day and X-mas ... several seasons. And I've never gone fishing on opening weekend. Am I weird? Do you look forward to opener as a 'big deal'? Is it really something for the serious angler, or, just ( as I expect ) an excuse to party? The couple times I went out hunting on opener ( 40+ years ago) it was clear that every single asshole with a license was out in force for that one day, and it was often their only 'hunting' day of the year ... does the same apply to fishing? |

With any luck. Think of it as licence sales cash for Fish and Game.. Actually we should be serving weiners and Pepsi, provide live music and encourage more folks out. Particularly kids and their parents. Make every one of those expensive gray little planters count. Recruitment is the name of the game. ;0)) Opening day builds constituency, not ideal but a real need considering the PETAbrains, anti hunting and fishing trends, and the ongoing assault on our waters and wild places. Think of opening day as an "entry level drug." If we leave the fight to the extremists of the NRA money machine, we will lose in the end, and blood sports will be relegated to the status of obscene misdemeanors associated with rightwing politics. Well, I suppose so. You do hang out on roff, you must have at least one or two loose screws. But having said that, there's nothing weird about avoiding the crowds on opening day. Do you look forward to opener as a 'big deal'? Is it really something for the serious angler, or, just ( as I expect ) an excuse to party? It would depend on the season and the quarry. In Wisconsin early trout season opens the first Saturday in March. Anybody out fishing for trout on the first Saturday in March in Wisconsin is out there for social reasons and not angling reasons. A group of us from roff did it one year and as a social occasion it was just fine. The muskie opener, on the other hand, is the last Saturday in May. Usually the muskie have been active for two weeks prior but DNR sets the date to give them some breeding room. Almost all serious muskie anglers are chomping at the bit and ready to blast off on opening day. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Saturday is opening day for the general fishing season in Wisconsin. As Ken mentioned, the catch and release trout season has been open here for a few months. And April can be a great month down in the Driftless. But the people who participate in that kind of thing are not all that numerous. Tomorrow will be the real deal for most folks. But probably not for me. Just too many people. GeoC. |
