Hello everyone. I wanted to introduce myself to the group. I decided it
was time for a hobby.

I have a few questions.

I am going to be buying a rod and reel in a few weeks and since this is my
first try at fishing I really didn't want to spend a fortune. There will be
time for that later. I have about $150 to spend on the rod and reel. I
think I will get a spinning reel to start out as I am told they are easier
to use than a bait casting reel.

Any suggestions on equipment? Length of rod? Action?

Also, what kind of line do you suggest? I am thinking about using Power
Pro. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks.

Please be kind ...

BigT

Good idea to get the spinning rod first, in my opinion anyway. Getting
started bass fishing should be all about fun....later you can, and will,
get more serious about it grin.
There are many very good spinning outfits on the market for under your
$150 budjet. You will get alot of response from the the guys that know
what they are talking about on here. But I wouldn't hestitate to
reccomend a matched Quantum rod / reel combination...under a hundred
bucks. But it is all about individual prefference, so give them all a
"look", and see what you think. The real thrill and fun of fishng is the
individual aspect of it...you matching wits against the fish, so keep it
individual, take the advice, then do what feels right for you!
Welcome to the wonderful world of fishing!

Since this is your first try at fishing, why spend $150? You can get
outfitted for half that, see if you're into it; if you are, you can
upgrade, and keep the entry level gear for backup. It's like a newcomer
to tools buying from Snap-On instead of going to Sears, or buying a
$1000 Weatherby rifle instead of a Savage.

I disagree, I have seen some nice spinning combos for fishing at
considerably less. I still have some combos that I use that were purchased
for less than 49.00 and have caught quite a few bass. The south bend phase
two combo is one of my favorites, 39.99 at sports authority. Decent real,
decent rod for a begginer. Caught me many a fish.

I hear ya Randy. Mr Buck was comparing it to a thousand dollar gun - I'd
compared a 600 dollar combo to that lol.

well, maybe for you guys. But if you read the OP, he said he had *never*
been fishing before. He could easily get outfitted for half that.

well, the #s don't lie. A 500 dollar rifle is to a 1000 rifle as a 75
dollar rod/reel is to a 150 dollar rod reel. The comparison was valid.

I don't know much about guns Buck, are there $8000 rifles (that aren't
antiques)? Because there are $800 rod/reel combos.
