Does anyone here have any experience with the Triton 1546 MVJ?
http://www.tritonboats.com/frames2.asp?cat=3&bid=65

The War Department at my house has decided that it will be OK for me
to buy a boat to replace my little 12 foot jon boat. I can't really
justify a full fledged bass boat, but I want something I can safely
take on larger bodies of water like Lake Seminole in Georgia. It also
has to be easy to tow with my four cylinder truck.

I have in mind getting this boat with a 25 hp manual start and
installing a bow mount, foot controlled trolling motor.

Bigger bodies of water? When I hear that I think Mead or Havasu or
Powell where a boat like that is ok in fair weather early in the day,
but will be a very wet ride later in the day even if the weather stays
good, and an extrememly wet ride with bilge pumps going strong on the
way in if the wind kicks up a bit.

If I were you I would go out and look over some of the waters you plan
to fish with it. Go out early on a weekend and watch to see what most
of the guys fishing are running. Now I don't mean toi imply a full on
20'+ bass boat is necessary if a bunch of the guys there show up with
one, but rather that if that's all you see, and none of the smaller
boat are launching it might be an indicator. On the flip side, if you
see one or two guys going out in smaller boats that's not a strong
indicator that small boats are fine on that body of water. It may be
guys that are only going out for a couple hours and plan to be off the
water before the traffic picks up, or it may be a couple guys who
don't know any better.

Spend a relaxing day watching the launch ramps, driving around the
lake, looking at the water conditions early and late, and maybe talk
to anybody you see launching with a smaller boat, and absolutely don't
forget that 99.999999% of anglers think whatever they have is the best
thing in the world when you do. LOL.

I would look for maybe an 18' boat for larger waters. As long as you do not
have tall mountains to tow over, your truck should do OK. Look at the bait
and tackle shops for listings on the wall for used boats. You should get
more for your buck, and it may only need new carpet to be looking fine.

I have fished Seminole several times, sometimes in a full on fiberglass boat
and others in a 16ft. aluminum. I would not feel safe in anything less than
a 16 ft. boat though. Being in the smaller creeks and coves would be OK in
a smaller craft but sooner or later you will want to be, or have to be, on
the big water.

I don't know if I am braver than Dick Tracy or just foolhardy, but I
used to fish on lakes as big as Kentucky Lake and Cumberland out of a
14 foot Starcraft with a 9.5 hp Johnson and never felt unsafe.

All of the boats below are for sale in Georgia with none more than
$8000. I have a Nissan P/U with a 4 banger and it will pull any of the
boats below. Good luck on your search for a boat.

I've had my Tracker Pro team 175 5-6 miles offshore in the Atlantic on
more than a few occasions. It's all a matter of weather and sea
conditions. 6 miles might sound like a lot but I could be back to the
shore in maybe 15 minutes.

I don't know what the Triton costs but I'm guessing there's a premium
for the name. You might do better with a G3 or another brand.

G3s are expensive boats IMO.

A15' long and 46" wide at the bottom is a nice 2 person Jon boat for medium
size lakes.

It will be good with a 25-30hp tilleroutboard.

I would get a 50# 12 volt bow mounted eletric.

You might be better off with the 1650 MVJ (16' long) with a 40hp tiller.
Still a very lihgt rig.
