Yep, that's the best $73 a year we spend. We get that back with

I totalled a car once-- very cold out, nasty weather. Cop shows up, asked
if I had AAA. I did, and he called them for me. Then he told me that
they
ONLY deal with AAA, or their own contracted towers. They won't deal with
any Insurance company or dealer roadside assistance plan. Really is great
in an emergency.

AAA:

1. When you call AAA a human being answers the phone.

2. In my own experience, as well as that of everyone I know who has
described dealings with them, AAA representatives are always courteous and
professional. They tell you who is coming and when......and the service
arrives within the promised window.

3. Once the AAA operative confirms that you are a member, there is no
dicking around with trying to screw the customer out of the promised
service.

4. When the roadside service arrives, there is no dicking around with
prices or other details. The service is provided......period.

5. Once the service has been rendered, there is no dicking around with
signing superfluous forms or other unnecessary bull****. You go on your
merry way (however you may manage it), period.

6. In the aftermath of the rendered service.......um.......well, there is
NO aftermath.......no bill, no paperwork, no phone
calls......nothing.....except ONE phone call within the hour, to confirm
that the service WAS provided......that's it.

7. I read somewhere a few years ago that AAA, at 40 million plus, was the
world's largest membership organization. Even looking only at emergency
roadside assistance, it is little wonder.

of course, in NJ, specifically with local cops, I and my children on 4
different occasions, have had cops either NOT want to wait for AAA, or try
to
bully me into using their towing company. A royal PITA and I know it has
to do
with the local contracts signed (and the associated pressure from the pols
to
use them).

You should move to America. Things are different here.

I still renew my "kids" on the membership every year. AAA doesn't care how old
they are or if they live at home or not, as long as they can receive mail at
that address. It is worth the piece of mind to know they're not going to be
stranded on the highway somewhere. One of the best values around, IME. They also
provide all the free road maps you can carry.

A word of advice: go for the AAA Plus membership. The regular AAA coverage is
lousy for towing, as it only allows up to 25 miles (IIRC) but the Plus goes up
to 100 miles. Typically, you can save the $25 price difference in one tow by
getting the car to the mechanic of your choice, or just towed home to safety.
There are other benefits to the Plus membership, but I can't recall what.

It's better than getting back to your van in the dark during a rain/snow storm
in October in Northern NY and finding that you have lost the only key you had,
even though it was tied to the waders. To top it all off, we were 4 miles from
anything.

just make sure you have a spare in a lockbox outside.

My wife was crowing about six months ago when I put a Hide-A-Key on her car.
"I've NEVER locked my keys in my car in my LIFE." (Caps on words she really
emphasizes.)

Since then, she has locked her keys in about four times. I know the first
time because she called me to bring her keys, and I gently reminded her
where the hidden key was.

Now, when she does it, she reminds me how glad she is to have a spare key.
I use the one on my truck about every three months, too. Getting older is a
bitch.

Having my kids all over this state, the ability to get them towed back to my
friend's garage has saved tremendously!

They'll allow more gas for an out-of-gas problem. They'll send two
wreckers to get your car out of a ditch if you need it. Those are the
biggies.

FWIW, after one year at pro, I dropped back down. My biggest worries about
emergency service is actually getting a tow truck at whatever ungodly scene
at whatever ungodly hour. Having to whip out a credit card for an
overmileage two isn't that big an inconvenience, and I think the money
saved is actually in the favor of the basic membership level.
