You can use PVC pipe available at any building supply store. Or if you can
scrounge a tube from a carpet roll this will work. Anything 4" to 6" in. in
diameter. Use heavy card board to cap the ends. Wrap the rods in bubble wrap
to extra protect them.

And if you must send them VIA POSTAL SERVICE, be sure to at least spring for
Priority Mail with insurance. It will cost a few bucks more, but it's worth
it.

Go to any carpet/flooring store. Ask them for the tube that the carpet is
rolled up on. I duct-tape the ends shut with the rods bubble wrapped
inside. I've only had one tube smashed shipping rods this way, and that was
done by UPS, not the postal service. The nice thing about carpet tubes is
that they usually are 12 feet in length, and you can cut them to whatever
length you need. I would recommend that you allow 2-3 inches space on both
ends.

Tape the rods together with the butts sticking beyond the tips. So any
bashing of the tube on end gets only the butt taking the jolt. I got this
tip from Steve Carson, who does the Penn sal****er presentations.

Priority Mail is the biggest rip-off the postal service has to offer.
Parcel post with insurance is more than adequate.
