Are Limpets any good as bait.
They look pretty tough out of the shell.
If so-:

Do they freeze etc or do they have to be used on the day.

I`d sometimes found limpets to be an effective bait for freshwater eels,
gobys and other shore dwellers... used to use them as bait as a kid

Where they are plentiful, they may be some use, but only certain types of
fish feed on them due to their difficulty in prising them off rocks. I seem
to recall you may be able to tempt wrasse with them?

Rarely - sometimes useful in desperation to catch a tiddler that you
then use as bait for something better.

They look pretty tough out of the shell.

They can be used to tip-off a fragile bait that's hard to keep on
the hook.

Do they freeze etc or do they have to be used on the day.

They can be used half-rotted as mullet bait. Keep a few in a plastic bag
for 48 hours in summer heat and if you can bear to use them scavenging
mullet in commercial fishing ports will take them.

Slipper limpets are a better option if you can get them.

Cheerio,

They are a great bait, especially for Wrasse, a 'tiddler ' of 4n1/2lb (2kg)
took one of my offerings last summer. Best to fish off rocks at low water
for them. Use dirty-bottom or float setup with size 2 or 4 hooks. Reel in
fast before they make it back home to the rocks.
I get them off with a pair of long-nosed pliers. They leave about a 1 mm
gap between themselves and the rock. If you are deft, very quickly shove the
pliers up the gap and lever off. Make sure you push along the rock to get
under their foot. Quickly is the clue ! Pliers ??= 'cos they flirt into
the sea otherwise !!!!
It's a nice way to spend a few hours on a summers day. It's also a good way
to get youngsters into fishing.

My Dad showed me how to use them when i was young. Found they were good in
the summer for float fishing for pollack, coalfish and wrasse around the
north coast of County Antrim but then thats going back a few years and I
haven't tried them since.

Way getting round them being hard is put it in your 'mouth' and chew it for
a bit to soften them up, though they can be a bit salty!! Have caught some
decent sized pollack with them.
