Okay, they done screwed up. I am now the President Elect of the
Cornhusker Fly Fishers.
We have many activities thoughout the year, like our Spring Fling
where we bring in a famous fly fisher/tyer. Next year we're bringing
in some guy named "Lefty" from Maryland.
Looking for activities, events that you all have done with your clubs
that might get us out of our standard. Right now, we have a "One Fly"
fishing tournement, a "Survivor" fly tying challenge (you get a pile
of junk and you have to tie flies using the materials you find in
there), a casting competition, and a carp fest. We're also
integrating a rod building class.
Any other novel or unique things that we could include? I'm thinking
a water safety course (I can explain the proper way to wade).

Let me know the date. I'll send a movie camera to one of the "pupils" so we
can capture this for future educational purposes - especially important
since this will be a one-time-only event. ;-)

Kinda like Wiley Coyote on stage doing his devil routine.
Bugs: "They loved it, they want an encore!"
Wiley as he floats toward the ceiling with little wings: "But I can
only do it once!"

Can Admiral of the Nebraskan navy be far behind......?

Seriously, congratulations. On my recent cross-country road
trip, I was pleasantly surprised by how, well, pleasant, Nebraska
was. No doubt have some fine gentlemanly fish there too.

Pile of junk? What a bunch of sissies....you need a roadkill fly tying
contest. Every material in the fly except the hook and thread has to have
been collected from animals that have had misfortunate encounters with
automobiles.

a casting competition,

Is this a gentleman's competition or are you really competing? Longest cast
using a broom stick, over the shoulder cast (no mirror) into a hula hoop @
40', flush the toilet, or casting accuracy with the target a switch that
lights a bottle rocket. Those are casting contests.

Any other novel or unique things that we could include? I'm thinking
a water safety course (I can explain the proper way to wade).

Unless Nebraska has a hold harmless provision for non-profit organizations I
would strongly urge you to reconsider. Have you priced liability insurance
lately?

Friendly folks too. We're expecting an ice storm tomorrow. The folks
on my cul de sac had an ad hoc get together and inventoried chainsaws,
towing straps, and the like. This all in the middle of a frisbee game
in 30 degree weather.
The club is about 120 members strong and 60 plus show up for any given
meeting. We get involved in brush clean up around lakes, youth
fishing education, casting for the cure, fly tying and casting lessons
and demonstrations, and many other things. We have members from age 8
to 96, men and women. Oh, by the way, you'll never go hungry at any
one of our meetings. These folks can do some serious cooking. Also,
we do trips to the surrounding states and we've a big one to Alaska
planned for 2009.
All in all, there are worse places to be a fly fisherman.

The Pelham Fish and Game club in Pelham NH http://www.pelhamfishandgame.com/
does a yearly fly fishing show. We attend as vendors and its great.
They do fly fishing demos, tying demos, raffle draws and all sorts of
things. The whole event really ballooned once they started bringing in
vendors by selling booths and what not.

Maybe you guys could do something similar

I am sec'y/treas of a 60 man club. We normally get 30 or so members at
a meeting. One thing we did that was fun, was to lay out a variety of
inexpensive materials on a table, and issue each member a #8 nymph
hook. The object was for each member to choose some materials, and tie
a fly without benefit of a vice. A panel of judges would choose the
best three flies and award prizes. At the time we did this 90%+ of our
members were intermediate to experienced tyers. Since then the
percentage of tyers has dropped, so we no longer have this contest,
but it was fun.
