TR: Norfolk River, AR and FFF Southern Council Conclave
Drove down to Mountain Home, AR on Wednesday. Got into Bull Shoals
White River State Park, got license and set up my tent. The dam was running 6 generators (about 15,000 CFS) so the river was unfishable unless you had a boat, so I just toured around. Thursday, I was the Vendor Chair for the Conclave and Thursday is Set- Up Day. Early in the morning, I was on the cell to a vendor and stepped in a hole. Ended up driving my knee into my ribs. Crap. REALLY HURT. Thought I had broken a couple. Continued working, and, due to a couple of no -shows due to work and business, I was also the Auction AND the MC for the awards banquet. Thursday night, I'm hurting so bad, the Council puts me up in a hotel. Friday, show is going well. Glitches here and there but the guests don't see them. Friday evening is the auction. I found out from the auctioneer that I put the items in the wrong order, AFTER I printed out 200 catalogs. Oh well. Ribs felt worse. Left halfway through. On the way back to the hotel, I coughed and one of the ribs popped. Okay, maybe not broken, but dislocated. I put my spey rod tube on the floor of the hotel room and flopped on it a couple of times. Ribs seriously popped, but felt better. Saturday, I MC'd the awards banquet. Got the crowd of folks from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas to holler "Go Big Red!" I am now in hiding. Sunday, after the board meeting, I went out with Chris Jackson, the executive director of the Southern Council. Chris happens to own a resort on the Norfolk River, the Riverside Retreat, and is also a guide. We went upstream in his boat and threw streamers at the big rainbows and browns. I got into a few fish, including a VERY fat 18" rainbow. Lots of fun. The water was incredibly clear and I could see big fish 10' down. The White and the Norfolk are incredible year-round tailwater fisheries. Temps are in the 50's in Jan and Feb. If you are jonesing for a place to fish mid-winter, great place to go. Chris is an excellent guide and the Riverside Retreat is awesome. Frank Reid (who's thinking that after the 9 hour drive, that he might want to see a doc.) |

Imagine Las Vegas minus the casinos and hookers, decorated by the folks of Wall Drug with free moonshine tasting and a stocked trout stream running down the center. By the way, cherries marinated in 100 proof moonshine will light you up like a Christmas tree. Frank Reid |

Frank I had a "Spotted Cow" at The Vault in Rockland on Sunday evening for two and a half.....and got to watch the last "ten minutes" of Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews giving the folks in Atlanta a lesson in football.....at no extra charge. giles who, for another fifty cents, would expect at least a home town team edging toward a serious world series bid or something. |
