More Iaconelli

I just jumped back into the Iaconelli thread & since it's kinda buried from
before Christmas I thought I'd add my 2 cents here...

I'm really surprised at some of you guys for disliking the guy just because
he expresses himself differently than you would. This guy was a mere
Federation boy not half a decade ago fellas, he's lived the dream. I admire
what he's done, and without actually knowing him personally I feel I'm in no
position to judge him characterwise. I think you guys should reconsider
your opinions...

I didn't see the footage, so I should probably keep my mouth shut. But
(lol) much like going out on the town on New Years Eve, you can do it
(celebrate) in such a manner that doesn't make you look like a jackass.
Unless, of course, you don't care what people think of you

Let me ask you, do you really care what others think of you?

I think Mike, like all of us, has an ego that helps him strive to be the
best. But I also believe that the past few years on the tour has toughen
and tested him. I believe Mike emotions were a combination of his shear
joy, and a bit of "in your face" for those who doubted him or played with
him over the past few years (mental games of psyche).

Mike has made it over one of the biggest hurtles in his life. Watch for him
to mellow a little. Oh, he will still get pumped up when he wins, but you
will notice more joy and less anger (like when he won his first B.A.S.S.
tournament). Do you remember his smiles and his joy? I believe that is the
Mike you will see next year.

Why reconsider? My opinion is that his outburst was unprofessional and over
the top. It has nothing to do with personal dislike or diminishing his
accomplishments or failing to recognize that he was in the federation a few
years ago. I don't have to know him to have an opinion on how he acts on TV.

IMHO, he's not a good enough actor to make the phony level of exuberance he
displayed pass for anything resembling reality. I don't have as much problem
with his on-stage antics as with the way he hammed it up for the camera when
he caught his last fish. At that point, he did not know that he had won, just
that he had put himself in good position to do so. There wasn't an ounce of
real emotion in his display, and it was the equivalent of an NFL receiver
doing the most over the top endzone dance in history -- after catching the
ball for a first down on the 20 yard line.

Of course it wasn't JUST Mike. There was a lot of excess celebration every
time one of them caught a fish. I've ridden in the boat with many of these
guys in the Classic for a lot of years. NONE has put on an ahole celebration
every time they caught a fish. In fact, none has gone as nuts onstage after
winning, as Mike did every time he caught a fish. I blame ESPN. I think the
contenders have been coached by ESPN to show as much excitement as possible,
to make "good TV", and ensure themselves on camera facetime. That they didn't
act that way when there was only one outdoor writer in the boat with them,
and the over-the-top celebrations started with the inclusion of the ESPN
cameras in their boats suggests that the behavior is more linked to ESPN than
to their real emotions. And from what I can tell, Mike went farther overboard
with it than anyone else.

Not sure how that's an excuse, much less a reason. If it was, then Bryan
Kerchal should have been Mike to the power of 10, since he was still a
Federation guy when he won the Classic.

I applaud Mike's fishing skills. He is obviously right up there with the best
of them. But I find his act embarrassing for the sport.

I caught Deion's show yesterday for the first time. It was
interesting to me that he confessed to putting on a show as a football
player, a deliberate act to gain attention to himself. And he said he
was tired of acting and he was unfulfilled in his life despite fame
and fortune. I thought that was pretty gutsy for him to say on TV.
He had a lot to say about how much he loved fishing. I almost like
the guy now. (not that what I think matters to him)

So, I just watched Charlie Moore's new show (Beat Charlie Moore) on ESPN2.
What a waste of TV bandwidth that is!

Charlie had been doing the whole over-excited act forever. I'm sure that he
fits right in with ESPN's vision of outdoors programming. But even he seems
a step down from Mike on the feigned enthusiam scale.

For what it's worth, Ted Ancher, who appeared with Charlie on today's show,
is a classy guy -- and usually a very quiet and serious dude -- who's got
to be embarrased by this show.

I totally agree, I would have wet myself right there in front of everyone,
people have different ways of reacting, a dream coming true can make anyone
seem over reactive.
