Looks like I'm in for Penns
Unless there's an apocalypse (I mean a serious one), arrive Sunday the
24th, leave Friday the 29th, either tenting or sleeping in the back of the truck...... This time, though, I'm not messing with no effete eastern green drake ties. Sticking with this one: http://tinyurl.com/ajqeb - JR |

"JR" wrote no effete eastern green drake ties. Sticking with this one: First, I'm glad you get to go ... you need and deserve the trip. Bob Quigley was the very first person to every show me how to tie a fly, back, ... way, way back, when he had a small shop under Rick's Lodge and was guiding on Fall River here in CA. The fly he showed me? ... his at the time, newly developed "Quigley Cripple" tied to match a Green Drake ... the fly in your link. I was in my buddies fly shop a couple days ago and noticed a DVD by Quigley .... his 'Signature Patterns" I bought it mainly from nostalgia, some pretty nice patterns I hadn't seen before, Bob is one of the best. As you clearly know, the 'old' Cripple is one hell of a good pattern ... the DVD shows a new variation ( for Hexs), but the original is very difficult to beat and retains my total confidence .... those snobby Penns trout had better watch out, ... go get 'em, JR Larry L ( who flashes on the fact that last season's first 20inch trout ate a Quigley Cripple in Brown Drake colors on Silver Creek ) |

Two biggest fish I caught the whole 5 days were both on the Quigley cripple. Rather fish that and sulfurs and leave the GD spinner fall to folks who know what they're doing. - JR |

Rather fish that and sulfurs and leave the GD spinner fall to folks who know what they're doing. - JR penns can be tough going, even with bugs on the water. i have been at penns twice when the drake hatch started...both were at the very beginning of the hatch. it was odd to see those huge mayflies, wings up like sails, floating down the stream...but even stranger to see the fish ignore all that "meat" for the much smaller sulphurs that were mixed in with the drakes. tom and mike makela have a tie that works the best from my experience...you should get a loaner from them to try as well. my only successful hook-up, and break off, was on a bug makela "loaned" me. i too flitted with the coffin fly hatch once...no luck...but it was amazing to see the blizzard of white coming out of the water, spiraling up 15 feet or more, and falling back in as darkness hit. i involuntarily snorted into, and quite voluntarily pulled flies out of, my mouth and nose, and tried to see through the damn things to the water...finally gave up. i don't enjoy fishing in the dark, but it's fun to watch folks like davePA, tom, and makela do it. speaking of makela...anybody heard from/of him? will he be at penns this year? jeff |

The Eastern Green Drake is apparently very, very, different from those bugs that get called GDs in the West. And I'm mystified by the whole 'coffin fly' thing, is this the spinner stage of the EGD?. As for fish eating the little and ignoring the big ... that is more common than would ever happen at a human buffet. |

"jeff" wrote in message . .. speaking of makela...anybody heard from/of him? will he be at penns this year? yes, and yes. And, I guess this year's lesson will be lobbing coffin flies among the bats, and how to stretch the evening rise into the morning hours(and still be fishing coffin flies). Tom |

"Larry L" wrote in message ... And I'm mystified by the whole 'coffin fly' thing, is this the spinner stage of the EGD?. yes, they are very pale cream color, with darker tails and mottled dark wings on a darkish thorax. And, they are big. Aim for something around the length of a 4xl #10 streamer hook for a reasonable imitation, and many naturals run bigger. As for fish eating the little and ignoring the big ... that is more common than would ever happen at a human buffet. true, especially early in the evening. Fish will commonly key on sulfurs(#16 or so).....right up until dark. Then, in my experience, they change over and ALL the larger fish, and most of the smaller ones eat spent Coffin Flies. Oh, and your waders in the water will not deter them. They routinely use anglers for cover when feeding. Tom |

As for fish eating the little and ignoring the big ... that is more common than would ever happen at a human buffet. the penns green drake is much larger than the western variety, based on my limited experience with each. the coloring also looked different to me. but, a beautiful bug on a trout stream anywhere i happen to be fortunate enough to see one. oops, you are right (as usual)...coffin flies are the drakes...don't think i was in a drake blizzard... crane flies perhaps?? skinny, long legged, big creamy colored flies...looks like a big mosquito i went with the penns dusk to dark crowd once, we waded out into the water, and as it became dark, a gazillion bugs appeared. the crane flies abundant among them. i think tom and frank reid fished them successfully that night. i just kept looking for the gates of hades i knew were open somewhere nearby. ....and, in confirming my error, i was reminded of another "coffin fly"...one i hope not to see anytime soon... jeff |
